What type and brand of oil?

What type and brand of oil are people buying? There's a wide spread of oil types that the manual says you can use.

Since the new "revised" spec is so new, especially with the viscosity change, I would suggest that you buy OEM MINI/BMW oil if you need it right now...3-4 months from now there will be many more options.

If I buy synthetic I buy Mobil One. However I'm sure any of the top manufacturers oils are fine (Valvoline, Pennzoil, Castrol, etc.).

A lot of it comes down to brand loyalty. I was a big Valvoline fan years ago before synthetics. Others loved Quaker State or Pennzoil....all of them did the job.

Just make sure whatever you buy meets the recommended specs for the car you drive.

Only other that is out right now (actually as of 6 months ago) that I was told with the new ratings was Total. That is what my Indy used after calling around to a few of his Mini Service Manager buddies. I have a '16.

Should be...
But MOBIL1 NO LONGER MEETS THE BMW/MINI SPEC...
The spec changed. So NOT ON A WARRENTY CAR.

Yeah...in the euro world, TOTAL has lots of oils...as a euro based refinery, they sell many euro oils... similarly they sell oils for VW and other surprised makes with needs that are not common in the USA...but often the dealer is closer or priced about the same, so for many TOTAL is good if buying on Amazon, or SOME auto parts stores that stock their oils....they have multiple versions...so it can be a challenge finding the RIGHT one.

My 'indie' uses nothing but Castrol Edge 5W30.

The slick kind. Made from synthetic dynosowers!

What do they use at the dealerships, anyone know? I never asked them.

Both my genI MCS &my genII JCW have used Mobil 1 synthetic along with ZMAX (both oil &gas) additves & Shell 93 octane. Never a problem and ZMAX gives you a warranty on your engine. Never a need for walnut blasting as the internals stay clean.

hmmm .. did not know that Mobil 1 fails to make MINI's list ......but what weight oil are people putting in their F56 F55 ?

vetsvette 10-26-2016 08:53 PM

The 0W40 did until this past January. I still have two of the 5 quart jugs on hand and intend to use them.

These specs change all the time and I often wonder whose getting rich off it. So if I dumped in some Mobil One from one year ago suddenly my car will blow up. I say use extra virgin olive oil. Better for the car's health.

only if it is first pressed
