Rear seat back removal anyone?

I've spent a bit looking over the forum to no avail...
We are traveling across the country... I'd like to remove the seat backs and gain some storage space.. Has anyone done it? Is it a pain? Is it just a matter of uncovering the bolts under that plastic in the center and sliding them out?
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Brian

Do you really think it buys you that much additional space? I have mine folded down (all the time) and just can't see where removing the backs would be worth the effort. That's my opinion anyway YMMV.

You could then lay the front seats back in a comfortable sleeping position.

So an update if anyone needs.
There's just one bolt under the plastic piece between the rear seat backs. Then both backs just slide out.
Just take care removing the plastic cover. There are 2 clips on the front side that have to come unclipped first....Or you risk breaking it ...... Like I did. Doh!

was it easiest to remove back seat from the boot ? Any other tips?

randomquickness 08-19-2015 05:45 PM

yes, the bottom part just lifts up and out. the seat backs are easiest to be removed from the boot

Interesting about breaking that clip. I had an early 2014 model and pulled the back seats 10 times at least. The clip was different and you could just pop it off from the back. Just broke the 2016 one using the same technique! $17 for a new one but mine is glued like you guys did.
Anyone figure out how to get the clips at the front off? Probably means it has to come off from the front...

So, I did get it off.

It's not difficult -- but it's somewhat tough to get lighting so you can see what you are doing.

I'll post pictures later today -- but the key thing is you need a wide blade flat screwdriver you wedge in from the back cargo area.

would be nice to have pics...

ok, finally some pics. on 2016 and later, remove the plastic cover between the seats from the FRONT. you will need a panel removal tool or similar. there are two clips, one on either side, and you are gently moving the plastic away from said clips to release the cover. as for removing the seat backs, there is a key shaped male/female part....wiggle the backs until the male ends clear the female ends and the seats pull away.

panel removal tool.

insert the panel tool and expand one side away from each internal male pin

oh and what does one lose by doing this you might ask? 38lbs.....a not insignificant weight reduction. granted you might want to put a panel back in, but if you didn't go crazy, call it 35lbs. colin chapman would approve.

need a quick panel to cover....Sneed4Speed has your back.
