M/S -> S mode in F56 Automatic, same as Sport Mode?
 

I read that M is for "manual mode" while S is for "Sport program", and I have a question about "Sport program" mode.
When I change from D to M/S, it'll display which gear I am in such as S3 (if in 3rd gear). Then, if I upshift or downshift, it'll become fully manual(-ish).

I read that S holds gears to higher revs since it's a "Sport program", but does this mode differ from starting off in Sport Mode (mid -> sport using the selector ring) in D?


edit: I tried S couple times (just move the shifter to left from D) after my car completely warmed up. I think it really holds the rpm to a much higher levels than just being in Sport Mode. I wonder if anyone drives with that mode in normal driving? I do sometimes use manual shifting mode in my Mazda, but I don't use it as this aggressive.

Yes it is the same shift patterns as when in sport mode.

No, it's definitely not the same. When I keep it in S using the gear stick, it revs into much higher range than putting Sport Mode with gear in D.

It's been a while since I played with it. Usually run in "Mid mode" w/ "D" most of the time, "Eco-mode" w/ "D" when traveling on the Interstate, and occasionally "Sport mode" w/ M/S, just for some fun. More often than not, I will just move the shift lever to M/S and leave the car in "Mid mode", if I am passing or looking for quicker response (since the M/S puts the car in a lower gear immediately (like downshifting manually), and give instant response and some engine braking on deceleration..

I do believe that going to "sport mode" does change the ECU settings and will effect shift points compared to "mid'mode", but have not compared the two (just M/S in Mid vs. M/S in Sport). I'd imagine doing so while driving and comparing the two would show any increases/decreases between the two. I'll rely on feed-back from you after testing. .
