Negotiating the price for a 2015 base mini hardtop

I'm pretty sure my next car is going to be a 2015 base mini cooper hardtop (since we couldn't find a 2014 with what we wanted) and plan to place our order next weekend. Does anyone mind sharing a bit about how willing their mini dealer was to negotiate price? How much were you able to knock off sticker price? Are there any fees I can negotiate? How much did you have to put down as a deposit to order yours?

As a side note: how do I add the 3rd sunshade or is it standard? and Does the hardtop come with a spare tire if you don't get runflats?

I've ordered two Mini's (an R56 in 2007 and recently an F56) from two different dealerships. Both orders were custom according to my specs, and there was no wiggle room around price -- MSRP was what I paid, and I was pretty happy about it as I was getting exactly what I wanted. You'll likely be able to get some freebies like floormats, etc, on delivery but don't expect to negotiate price on anything from the factory.

I expect a dealer would be more willing to negotiate price on inventory they already have sitting in their lot. In those cases, you can try to build out an equivalent configuration using the online configurator and get a feel for what the MSRP would be if you ordered it yourself. It's possible that there's some markup built into the sticker on those.

When I bought my R56 seven years ago, the deposit was $500. For my F56, the dealer said the deposits range from $1000 (common configurations that are easily resellable) to $2000 for more esoteric configuration that are more unique. This policy probably varies by dealer, so I'd just ask.

With the car fairly new and with a custom order it will be hard to get much off MSRP. And on 1 Oct that goes up $250 for Justas. We managed to get a little off using USAA car buying certificate. And since ours was in the batch of EPA holds we got a bit more off. However, if you can find one on the lot they should be willing to deal.

If you live in a large market and have several Mini dealers to work with maybe you can do better? Fees were actually pretty low.

Except for the EPA delay the Mini cr buying process was pretty good.... I guess I'd hope so paying MSRP for the car.

We ordered our car in Jun, we should get it in less than 2 weeks now. It will be nice.

My dealer deposit was $1000. Some Dealers will charge you MSRP but do not add any dealer extra charges. Other dealers you can get little off the MSRP but then try to sell you dealer extras or add "Dealer Prep" charges. I have found if you buy off the lot you have better chance to deal and also if there are more than one dealer in the area. One last thing if they give you some off on the MSRP and you do a trade list they will give less for your trade. Because there are very few F56 on the dealers lots right now it will be very hard to get any or some off the MSRP.

I think it all depends on your location and the number of dealers in your area. We are in LA and we were able to negotiate $1650 off msrp (from 3 different dealers) on a mildly equipped custom ordered 2015 Cooper S. There are a lot of dealers in the area so I am sure that helped. $500 deposit. No extra charges other than $850 destination charge. No dealer add ons. No trade-in. No finance.

Of course, ymmv. Also, margins on a base justa will be a little lower.

If in LA area, pm me and I'll pass my SA information along to you.

The owner of our dealership owns a few other dealerships in town (Range Rover, Jaguar, Buick) and has what they call 'fair pricing'. Their prices are discounted several hundred dollars and are firm. Also unique to most dealerships their sales force is salaried and not on commission. The only thing I was able to negotiate was their documentation fee which I refused to pay and they agreed.

Full MSRP on my custom order (15 minutes away from this dealer, next closest dealer is hours away). $500 deposit. Our sales folks are commission. Remains to be seen if any freebies are thrown in. Haven't heard of any from anyone else who bought there. It would be great if they tossed something in as a nice gesture for waiting since July, but I'm not counting on it.

This is a pretty good deal, we missed the cut off by a few days...

Becky, if you were part of the EPA hold group they should have done something for you. $500 in free accessories should have been nearly automatic. I think that even comes from MINIUSA and not even cost the dealer anything. Or I think they would take another $500 off the dealer.

Since the hold came the day after I sold my car which was just a couple days before I was supposed to take delivery, my deal was to buy a 2013 Clubman they had sitting on their lot. (In fact, when I went in to pick up the Clubbie, the car carrier that was supposed to have my F56 on it was sitting at the dealer.) It's at no cost to me, and when I trade it back in to them for my F56, it will be pretty much just turning over the keys and transferring my plate. Of course I later got to thinking how it gets a 2013 off their books AND pretty much holds me hostage because it cost as much as my F56 but isn't the car I want. But since I bought it, it's what I have if I don't go through with my purchase of F56. The first payment is due the end of October. Of course I never considered canceling so it's not an issue, but I wonder if that counts as the sum total of my deal. I'm not complaining since they made sure I have a car to drive and it's in a way that benefits both of us overall. But a token freebie that could go with my F56 would be nice.

Agree and I most likely I am going to ask for some token of freebies.

Went to the local dealer, they wanted MSRP (which I was willing to pay) and had dumb add-ons, and when they didn't budge on the add-ons immediately, I went to USAA car buying service. While it didn't have any specific price on their site, I did call their recommended dealer who is several hours away. They offered $1k below MSRP and no addons without me even asking for a deal. $1k deposit, didn't hassle me on financing when I got there and gave me a 'good enough' deal on my trade-in.

Tell us what general area of the country you're in and we can make recommendations. I'll even get a credit if you're in my area and I refer you!

I got $500 off a custom ordered car immediately. The EPA hold has allowed me to get additional, but I would expect most locations would have an opportunity to get $500 off. Sales have been lagging so I'm guessing both the salesmen and dealerships are likely getting more ready than ever to deal.

What kind of dealer add ons are you guys referring to? I can't remember my dealer pressuring me to buy anything extra. At least not yet anyways.

I bought my car off the lot, it remained unsold there for almost a year because the price was $41k and it is a 2014 JCW Coupe which is one of the least ordered cars Mini makes (the other is the JCW Roadster). It already had about $1500 of "dealer installed" stuff: LoJack theft recovery, tinted windows, a sunshade (said $300!!!), and a cooler antenna (also $300). I told them to remove the antenna and sunshade so they just "gave them" to me (those are worth about $50 retail) as well as the other stuff, and knocked another $1000 off the car. I think they still did pretty good on it. You F56 buyers will probably pay retail. I did on my 2007 I bought off the lot.

Our dealership showed $500 off msrp but that was only part of the number shuffling so we could get what we wanted for our trades.
I did Ok on mine, a little over book value trade in.
I think we did really good on hers though considering its on pretty poor shape and it was a couple thousand more than we were expecting.

Oh and Becky you should definitely call Mini USA and get some free accessories!! We got to order $600 worth and my wife had been driving a loaner F56S for the past couple months.

$26k out the door with an msrp of just over $27k on my 14 justa. Took about 4 hours to get that small discount. This included the ******** $395 dealer prep fees, I guess that did include all weather mats and some other minor things. I'm sure I could have gotten that removed, but I was exhausted and $400 wasn't gonna break me... Mini doesn't really like to budge on price, and I know they weren't budging at all on custom orders when I picked mine up.

my dealer agreed to 1500 off msrp. custom ordered a 2015 MCS fully loaded. dealers are allowed to do 500 over cost btw. just need to find a dealer willing to sell it for that price. if you push them enough they will budge.

I got dealer prep fee $395 removed, told them that I want to be the one to peel off any of the plastic sheets, and I need no car wash, no extras. All weather rubber mats costs a little over $100. I'm only going to buy the fronts for $66. 3M door liner protector costs around $10 on Amazon.
The only real discount I got was $250 discount for being a Costco member (for whatever reason, since I asked). So for me, it was MSRP - $250. I'm leasing by the way. Basic Hardtop 2015 + auto trans + sport package. 61% residual after 3 years.
I'm in Oregon, and there's only one MINI dealer, so that may be why it is harder to get any discounts here. Just started production yesterday.

Edit: I called the dealer today, they said they can add in the Driversed.com $500 credit. I signed up for the course for 50% off using a coupon code, it cost me $32.50, and finished it in the evening. Sent them the certificate. I was going to ask about this credit before and had forgot about it. Thanks to this thread, I'm saving another $500 now, lowering monthly lease payment about $15 for the next 36 months.

Did you get this credit? I emailed it to my MA and they had never heard about it but says it was a nice find. Our car is currently going through the Panama Canal so it would indeed be a nice find.

The details about $500 discount can be found on miniusa.com website.
Driversed.com 50% off coupon code is SUMMER50 and it ends 9/30/2014. I took the DriversEd adult course.

@Surfer, the dealer said they will apply the discount, but I haven't got any real document that shows the reduced price yet.
So I guess I'll be ending up with $750 below MSRP for my order.

What a great find on the drivers ed course. I wish that is something I could take advantage of; however, I ordered my car on 6/20/2014 and according to the disclaimer it says you are not eligible if you ordered prior to 7/1/2014.

@hp79 Sent you a private message =)

@surfer Yes, my SA confirmed I could apply the discount if I showed them the certificate of course completion.

@mikeymike1985 I would still try to get your dealer to apply it.

So, I went to the Mini Motoring event today and I saw sign stating $500 off your next purchase / lease.

I'm wondering if this can be combined with the DriversEd.com $500 discount that I posted earlier. I'm emailing my dealer for more info. Maybe you guys could do the same.

Below are the links to the two discounts (the motoring challenge states a special incentive certificate number is required but I never received anything at the event itself or via email).
