Wax type stuff coming out of hood

Had our '16 convertible about 2 weeks. Had first hot couple of days and out of low spots and cracks in upper/lower sheet metal that makes up hood is where "wax" is coming from. Anyone hear of this and what it is??

I wish they would have said something. They didn't say a thing about this stuff. Thanks for response.

The dealer is supposed to steam most of it off. The hood comes coated too so they sometimes give you light dealer-installed swirl marks on the hood. hot weather melts it out and it will eventually stop, just don't let it sit on the bumper/trim. not a problem in UK since it's always 50 deg F there.

cosmoline, evil stuff, stained the plastic bra on my car and on a really long drive I will see a drip, from a five year old car. Walk around a Mini car lot and you see it dripping.

I found a similar goop on my car shortly after I bought it. The Dealership told me it was some sort of paste they put on the seams of the hood before welding the parts together. It never got on the black trim but it collected on the top edge of where the left and right sides of the bumper meet the hood. I used goo gone and qtips...plus a lot of patience to get most of it off. I still have some residue, but I've been waiting for the weather to warm up. The MA told me it softens in heat. Last time I attempted to removed it, it was winter and in the 40's.

I work at a dealer and we use new car solvent to get it out. The factory puts a LOT in the hood, like they cake this crap inside. We use a heat gun and this solvent to get as much out as possible.

+1 its cosmoline, you will need to just keep cleaning it off and it will come out, hot soapy water and elbow grease.

I tried a product called Cosmonot that did work very well as dissoving the cosmolene, but it altered the color of the plastic trim. I am told Kerosene will melt it too, but I would guess that will discolor the plastic as well. The plastic developed a grey/white film on it where I used the cosmonot. Any of the black trim treatments worked to hide the discoloration, but it came back quickly. That was on my 2011 mcs. My new car has not suffered yet.

Beats the heck out of rust and paint damage from the transatlantic boat ride's salt water air and storms though, right?

Still drives me crazy, especially the front black plastic wheel well trim -- hard to get the run marks all the way gone. And I still get a little ooze around the headlights -- onto the front chrome grille trim. Mineral spirits gets it off easily, but it makes me nervous every time I get at all aggressive with cleaning it.

Sure smelled good when it was burning off the new engine though New car smell on steroids.

If Cosmolene gets on your plastic wheel arches, and stains them, have the dealer replace the arches and clean under warranty.
Happened to me.

Denatured alcohol, in a spray bottle with a soft rag takes it off. Isopropyl will probably work. It softens it and it wipes off. Does not effect clear coat.

MINI Dealers have a TSB on this....corrected under warranty.

It also includes a re-spray of a product in area where it melted out from....
