Aftermarket rotors and pads

Doesn’t seem my winters will fit a big brake kit without spacers, so that dream is dead. I need new pads and rotors soon. Can someone recommend me something for spirited street driving, in city with four season, that doesn’t rust terribly, low dust and noise. Ideally something that looks decent behind an open wheel design. My stock brakes have about 4mm left after 23k km of city driving. It’s sad.

Still not so comprehensive. I was told to stay away from slotted or drilled, they will just rust away in canada. I’m fine with that. I’d really like to have the hat come painted/coated since my own brakes are rusted to hell and look like junk. I was looking at ebc rotors and either Green stuff (I’ve read they are dusty) or red stuff pads (Not sure I’m so into the bedding process or the squeal when cold). Maybe Zimmerman rotors, or I can stick with oem, which clearly don’t last long, are dusty and rusty. My other ask was about the big brake kit. No clue if they fit behind masterpiece style 520 wheels.

I've had good luck with Zimmermann coated rotors on my VW and now my Mini. Quiet, zinc-coated to prevent rusting around the edges, held up great on my TDI for tens of thousands of miles.

FWIW I replaced my OEM F54 rotors after less than 10,000 miles because the OEM rotors had a huge rusted out area, covering probably 1/4 of one of the rotors on the inside side. The gouge caused a lot of brake wobble. I'm not sure if the gouge was a casting defect, or caused from the car sitting on the dealer lot for a long time, but it sure was annoying on a brand-new car.

thanks Reid, it’s always nice to commiserate. I heard Zimmerman was good value. My shop offered me some, so I’ll go with a coated set. What pads do you run with it? There are so many choices and it’s funny how the review for every option range from abysmal to amazing. There is something for every type of driver/application and people often buy the wrong thing.

I didn't swap out my pads, just my rotors for now. The original pads looked fine when I was changing out the rotors.

Rusty/pitted/etc rotors will mess up your pads faster than anything.

For the factory BBK, you need minimum 17" I think. I can't say much about the rotors as I'm looking for new rear rotors myself. Personally I rather not use those drilled and slotted ones. As for brake pads, my OEM pads were gone only after 16000km, then I switched to carbotech pads. I'm at 41000km and those pads are awesome. They produce a bit more squeak on the initial bite, but if you can live with it, they are very good pads.

I've got 18” wheels for winter with an et 57. My parts guy at the dealer said that he doesn’t think it’s going to fit...so I’m back to rotors and pads. I’ve got super low km on my car for it’s age so the rotors are dying from corrosion from exposure to salt more than age.

Strange. The OEM spec for JCW wheels are 18x8 et57 or 56... they should fit the BBK. are yours OEM wheels?

I had the same thought. The grip spoke style 524 are apparently the only 18” oem that clear. I have these below, style 520 masterpiece that were an option and some other 18” set that’s a BMW replica that’s banged up and out of round.

Funny how fast mods add up. I convinced myself when I need brakes I’d upgrade. I may need to give up on this one. The resale on our car in Canada is sad. For what I paid including all the mods, I can’t think of something else as much fun.
