I'm very impressed with your work. However, that looks very vulnerable to aspirating water. During a torrential downpour (as we've been getting every other day for two months), driving through a big puddle, or getting blasted by someone driving through a big puddle in an oncoming lane, could instantly dump a gallon of water in there and your engine would be toast (soggy toast). I could see a snow plow throwing tons of snow directly into there too.
I’m pretty sure that car isn’t meant as a daily driver going through all kinds of weather.

Not that dumb. I have the AEM intake on my second gen which utilizes the hood scoop, drove through many a down pour and no problem. Would probly take going though a big puddle to get enough water in there, and at that point other sh*t will likely get messed up

Does yours have upward facing air intakes that connect directly to the scoop as in CP *****'s prototypes? Also, CPWilly lives in Minnesota where it snows 9 months out of the year.

Johnny... Its on my list to stick a garden hose in the scoop and see how it will handle some water.
Snow testing will commence soon! It certainly feels like nine months of snow when it happens, in a 3 months we should have a little to test it in.

It's far more likely that the engine would stall out due to lack of air than for water to get to the turbo charger or cylinders. Consider the intake path: The air goes from a scoop (whether behind the grill or from the hood duct) into the bottom of the airbox, then gets pulled upwards through the air filter. Even if you fill the airbox with water, that water has to get through the filter. While that filter paper might get soggy after a while and give way, the engine's going to be sucking on vacuum long before that. Odds of the water getting as far as the turbo are pretty slim. The engine's just going to stop running due to lack of osygen.
Similar logic applies to an aftermarket cone filter as well. Foam will flow more water than paper but it's still going to slow down hard.
Data Logging has begun!, the two graphs below show the time it takes to heat soak the FACTORY intake system. This data log was captured on my drive home and I will need a 30-40 minute drive to get a good understanding of a complete heat soak.
Both graphs below are from the same drive, the first graph shows the difference between the ambient air temps and the intake manifold temp. The second graph shows speed, airflow, ambient air temp, and intake air temp.

It seems like the thread just stopped. How is the design and refinement effort going?

I have made some progress with the testing and the design, I have had a few projects take over at my day job and I haven't had a chance to focus on this. I plan on putting some time in tomorrow on refining the design and finishing up the data consolidation. The design is really close, I have a few finishing touches before I can call it ready for a permanent install.
I am glad that things are coming along. A friend of mine pointed me to your post. I had just been telling him that it bugs me to have the hood scoop that is just for show. I had been looking to see if anyone had a mod to resolve that issue, but was only finding options for the R56. I told him I was done looking and was just going to do my own. I am happy to see that others are working on a solution. Your concept looks great! Keep us in the loop.
How's progress going? I'm really excited for this - I've been keeping my eye on this thread since the beginning. To be perfectly honest, I would be willing to pay for a functional scoop on my F56, and I think many others would be, too.

Definitely a great design, but to me more flash than function. Fingers crossed another company replicates something like this out of ABS at a reasonable price point.

+1 on that. I loved the AEM intake design for the F56 series. I hope they will decide to do that for the F5x. But I'm not holding my breath, either.
Following this with great interest. But, how easy is it to open up the two rectangular holes that lead to the scoop? Is it as simple as taking it apart or did you have to cut the metal? And, do you plan to make the intake available to the masses?
