So my wife has a 2017 Clubman all4 and when we purchased it the sales person said it had "fog lights". What she should have said is it has day time running lights... We live in the north west corner of Virginia at the top of a mountain so it can end up with heavy fog at the drop of a hat.
She doesn't want after market fogs and looking at it it looks like the spot under the running lights is all set up for fogs they just are not there and no switch in the car. The local dealership said it would require a new wiring harness and so in short not even possible.
That seems a little funny to me, so was hoping someone here had a suggestion.
If they know that it was sold with fog lights, they should be held accountable. If you can't prove it, then go aftermarket.
Do you have LED headlights? If the answer is yes, forget the factory fogs because on my car they don't add much to the LED lights. lED seems to diffuse the light more effectively in fog.
OP is correct. The base clubman All4 has no fog-light switch.
There's a light in the bumper but it's not a fog-light, just a DRL.
The photo posted by JohnnyQuest is the "S" variant.
That picture above also shows a vehicle equipped with the LED lighting package rather than the Halogen setup. The DRL's on the LED pkg vehicles is a ring around the upper lights and the upper half of the lower module is just a white running light that is only on with either the light switch on in either the parking/headlight positions and off when the switch is off.
My guess is if you want to go with fog lights, best to look at aftermarket options. OEM items would be a pretty pricey path, which is why the dealership is stating it isn't possible.
Little shocked the dealership stated it had fogs, when it clearly didn't. Either a clueless or unethical tactic in any case.
There are always these if you're looking to retrofit something. These are MINI OEM parts and are designed for MINIs without factory fogs. You get a LED halo for DRLs, crescent for parking lights and it does have LED fogs, though I don't know how bright the fogs are in comparison to the factory LED fogs.
I just had the same thing happen as DaveyBeer when I picked up my new Cooper a few days ago -- salesperson mistakenly told me that fog lights were standard. She likely thought I was asking about daytime running lights. I couldn't really make her accountable for it since she had been fired at some point between order and delivery. Plus, I signed off on the order without the lights so kind of my own stupid fault for not double-checking. It was pretty disappointing to press the fog light button only to realize it was a dummy.
These 63122361243 retrofit fogs look pretty slick though. What are these wired into in the cabin? How are they controlled?
I live in Chicago (burbs) -- not every winter is as mild as this one. I used the fog lights on my Gen 1 like crazy.
Thanks for the reply. Since I have only dummy buttons for fog lights, I guess my question was really... how are the fog lights controlled? I found this on another site selling the same kit....
"NOTE: LED Daytime Running Lights are only available for vehicles with existing front fog lights (SA 520). To represent all functions (navigation light, daytime running light, fog light), SA 520 (fog lights) is required. The product can also be installed in cars without SA 520; in this case, however, only the navigation and daytime running light functions are represented."
...which is kind of what I feared.... Not really worth it as a DTRL upgrade. I don't mind spending a little extra if all it would take would be a new Control Element Light Switch (https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...t/61319390255/) and coding.... but I have this bad feeling that I am out of luck there too. :(
These are for MINIs with fog light, just without LED headlights or LED fog lights. Thats switch: That's is for front and rear fogs. People have gotten to work with the non LED lights option also. To get it to work with the upgraded leds fog should work also.
I'm really surprised the wiring harness doesn't already have everything to install, plug in and have coded to work. Only thing left to buy would be the switch.
I am working with 2 dealerships now trying to figure this out. They are escalating to BMW, one says they tried it and couldn't get it to work. (I find this fishy as fog lights are a rather simple concept) The other is intrigued as they haven't heard of anyone doing this yet to the 2017. I know I had a 2015 Subby before this and it was an easy 600 buck fix when we bought the car but they had a kit for it. I just think BMW hasnt released a kit yet and no one has tried it so they are saying it can't be done. I just can't image that I am the first person to really push to have factory fog lights installed
Well, you're not alone and for whatever it's worth, I got the same "wiring-harness-limitation" answer from the sales manager.
I live within 30 minutes of 4 dealerships. I may contact one of the older Mini service depts. to see if one of them can figure something out. I'm trying not to obsess too much over missing fog lights and dummy buttons but... I kinda am.
On another odd note: I noticed this afternoon that my rear non-functioning fog light has a bulb installed. I read somewhere here on NAM that the rear fog can be activated ... care more about the fronts but I suppose that's something...
The only option available at this time are the LED rally lights. While they are not the fog lamps you had originally expected to have with your MINI, they offer, in my opinion, more usable light than the fog lamps because they are mounted up higher. I know the deer are bad out that way (Ive dealt with it for 13years commuting here) and I think these would be your best bet. I have priced them much lower than the suggested retail as a courtesy to you given the circumstance.
Well that's pricey but great news. I reached out to 2 separate dealerships yesterday... suppose to hear something tomorrow. From what you just posted, I suspect better news than what I received from the first dealer.
ah crap. I see that now. I guess I just read what I was hoping to hear. I considered rally lights... might be a bit "showy" for me though. I bet I hear the same thing tomorrow or Friday. Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll eventually introduce a retrofit kit like was available in the past.
