Im guessing countryman and r56 are similar for this.
The following how to says next step is to unbolt and move over the vacuum reservoir to expose two E12 torx bolts to the starter.

I managed to replace the starter on my 2011 S CM.
Keeping things simple:
1- disconnect GND cable on battery
2- from Bottom remove 2 bolts 8mm, remove power cable off the starter and little black connector (remove small metal clip).
3- from Top remove air filter box, pipes and black pipe coming from the front of vehicle to air box.
remove 1 bolt 13mm its very well hidden, the bolt is located underneath the 2 water hoses coming from the thermostat hosing, use a 45 angle adapter attached to your wrench.
4- from bottom remove starter
5- transfer bolt metal sleave from old starter over to new starter installed on same bolt location
6- install new starter
I still have a problem, the car will not start.

I was wondering if you have ever fixed the starter issue. I have been dealing with the same thing for about 6 months now.

I replaced a shorted starter. That was pretty easy to do, but the starter doesn't actuate properly with the start button. I have bypassed the starter button with two wires and a switch and I'm really getting tired of it.
Hopefully you have fixed your issue and could shed some light on the situation.

Thanks

i had my transmission replaced by a reputable bmw/mini mechanic. after i got the car back, i was told the starter needed some time to be "mated" to the transmission. the only symptom is that it will squeak for about half a second on start up. its been a week now and still squeaks, and at some cases it squeals and needs a second press. does that sound about right or do you think the metal sleeves werent properly installed so it's misaligned?

(hope its ok i posted in an existing R60 post instead of making a new one.)
