INPA/OBD2 Cable Confusion

Holy hell, all I want to do is buy a cable to use with my R53. Searches lead to instructions to solder pins 7&8 but why would I? Don't they just sell the right cable? Searches for R53 cables for sale lead to products that say they work for R53 and R56. How could that be if one needs those pins soldered and one doesn't?

This one says it does both. It has the R53 listed under K-CAN and D-CAN. Wouldn't it be one or the other?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/FOR-BMW-USB...4383.l4275.c10

So confused...

Because gen 1 Mini is not the center of universe. No one in the right business mind will bother to build a cable just for our cars. Go read up on the variants of ODB pins used by BMW over the years will help you understand the challenges. These are car manufacturer-specific implementations.

Well I disagree, with millions of Gen1 Mini's produced, but your point is well taken.

I thought there were cables to buy that had pins 7 & 8 connected, or ones that could connect or not, but all references seem to be in old posts. As I wrote above, some sellers list them for R53's AND R56's but those listings are incorrect?

Then they have ones with switches...

So really, nobody sells them? Seems crazy.

Mini is more niche than you think. I can't find WW sales figure. Not even close to millions of gen 1 produced for US. The last column is cumulative total.

US is by far the biggest market and here are some facts:

Now let's just make an assumption. What is the % of gen 1 owners will go mess with the modules? Just go search on INPA and NCS-expert on this forum and you will see how insignificant the number is.

An answer! Thanks mega72. The problem I have now is that all of those come from Bulgaria or Romania. Ugh. So no problem as long as I don't want to drive this car for 2 - 3 weeks. Looks like I may be getting one & soldering pins 7 & 8 anyway.

Will the scanner at Advanced Auto tell which side I'm have a problem with?

got android? just get a elm327 and torque app. scanners will tell you generic engine faults but you cannot go deeper into modules like abs

Yeah that's what I have but I'm trying to diagnose a trifecta (after already replacing both sensors in the front).
