I went through the trouble of returning my white pcb cable back to Ecutool. I had to fight them to get them to realize they had the cable and finally was able to get them to send me a replacement green pcb cable. I had to go through paypal and ask for a refund which got their attested and they ground shipped me the proper cable. I just tested this yesterday nearly 2 months after getting the original cable and it works. If you get a white cable it is junk. Force them to replace with the green cable.

Sorry - but this thread is huge and searching is hell ...

... but, is there a code process for changing the climate control to move in increments of 1-degree instead of 2-degrees?

I've looked through the IHKA (climate control module) options and see no evidence of any setting like this. Sorry.

I think it works the way it does because in Celsius mode it does move in increments of 1 degree (which is roughly two degreees in Fahrenheit).

Is the cable for an F56 going to be the same as the latest cable mentioned in here for the R56?

That's a great question. Will the software be the same with new datens or did they change enough that we have to use something else? Also, when will the datens be available for the F56?

I guess a good way to check is to see if there is an F30 option in NCSExpert because I believe that is what the new 3 series BMW is referred to.

Went through everything step by step and worked the the "kombi" module first. eveything downloaded and changed the code just fine but when I re-wrote back to the kombi module my fuel gauge doesn't show anything and a warning light is constant on the display showing yellow exclamation point with arrows pointing to the boot lid of a convertable (I have a R56 Hatch). Anything I do i cant get the warning to go away. I tried re-writing my original code but to no avail. Any thoughts?!

I came here just to post that same icon.
I added $522 to VO and I tried defaulting CAS and FRM for my xenon retrofit, but it ended up trying to default all of them. It would go through the first two or three, but get an error on ABG, and got the icon as described by xcmtber14.

That's where it's stuck. I have no idea what to do.

What datens are you using? That's where I found my problem. I was using v38 datens not realizing that they were date specific. I recently had my car in for a timing chain and (assuming) had my fimware updated to the latest version. I downloaded and installed the v51 datens and recoded my ecu everything is back to how it should be.

Same thing happened to me and newer datens fixed the problem.

Speaking of datens, they seem to be impossible to find a good, legit download.

Does anyone have a preference on where to host them?

There's a whole thread in the Countryman electrical forums where you can find updated datens. Here is a link to a post with the version 51.2 files: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...3-post912.html

Ignore the "Countryman specific" title - R56 datens are R56 datens. There is nothing special about the R60 from a NCS Expert point of view - you just need to have new enough datens.

There's actually a lot of good info in the main sticky too. A lot of the info in this current (R56) thread is dated. Honestly, I no longer recommend following the procedure detailed in the first post of this thread; instead I'd follow the procedure in the R60 thread (https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...r60-guide.html). It's not totally up to date, but still way better than the current convoluted and clumsy software setup procedure.

I tried new datens, and now my car is worse off. The battery shows a black circle, and the ignition will strobe white/black. Now it's just white constantly. The tach/fuel gauge were functioning fine the first time I pushed the ignition, but now every time, the lights just flickr and might stay on or might stay off, and the Ignition white circle is still white.

I didn't deviate from any pdf guide I found.. I have no idea what went wrong. Am I going to have to get this to a dealer somehow?

I don't think this is possible. The standard OBD2 ELM327 dongles for monitoring engine PIDs are different than the K+DCAN cables, IIRC.

Making coding easier with the BMW Coding tool

I just wanted to give back a little to this and all the other threads that have helped me learn to code my car.

I've found this handy tool for doing a few things with your coding setup, including:

easy updates of Daten files
translating the German feature descriptions into ENGLISH!
working with the .MAN files

Here's where to get it ( you need a free account on bmw coding to access it)- Here

Here's a thread on using it - http://garage-automotive.com/printthread.php?tid=2219

It doesn't replace NCSExpert, but it makes the whole setup easier to use, IMO

Trying to get my cable to be seen in WIN XP Pro running in Oracle VBox inside Windows 8.

Windows 8 sees my cable, but not in the VM?

Any ideas.

You need to tell VBox to attach that device to the VM. It's in Settings under USB. At least, it is on the Mac. There should be a similar setting in Windows. It may say "Add USB Filter".

Figured it out!

Contrary to the instructions posted here, you DO have to check the USB to SERIAL CONVERTER box when installing INPA.
