Drivetrain Results of my survey of Cold Air Intakes available for MCS
#1
Here are the results of my survey of Cold Air Intakes available for MCS.
Diamond Racing/Pipercross: $145
Outmotoring (Pilo: $150, Mini Madness: $240)
MINI Mania/K&N: $200
Racing Dynamics: $220 (no photo)
MINI-Madness: $239
Rogue Engineering: $239 (regular) or $259 (black)
Turner Motorsport: $250
MINI Motorsport (MINI Madness: $240, Pipercross: $160, ALTA: $259)
Alta Mini Performance: $260
Some comments:
1) They all seem more alike than different.
2) Prices also seem pretty similar. The Alta costs the most, but it appears that the quality might be better (i.e. You get an extra higher capacity tube out of the box.)
Hope this will stimulate some discussion. I'd also like to see a similar survey of ECU upgrades....

just to clarify....
the rogue intake listed is the same one sold by.....
mini-motorsport, rogue & out motoring...
all about $240 as listed.
i've had the above intake for months now....
it's a quick and easy install, sounds terrific and is touted to give a hp increase.
it certainly "feels" faster
peace,

Yeah, what D-mini-ero said. Also Maxibeetle, you forgot to mention the BMP which is cheaper, louder and gives somewhat of a power increase.

MiniPilo: I knew you were working on one. I think yours is the one I found at Outmotoring, though at a slightly higher price than listed on your site. When I looked, your site listed a price, but didn’t indicate they were for sale quite yet.
CooperSpeed: I deliberately left off the BMP/Promini one and some others (K&N Typhoon) that are not true cold air intakes. The MCS has a CAI standard and the ones I was looking for and included in this list improve on that by using a larger filter with the standard air inputs from the cowl and grill. I'll be moving soon to San Antonio. Although the other non-CAI systems may draw in more air, it’s going to be hot, underhood air. For my situation, that would negate any positive effects after about 5 minutes of driving.
d-mini-ero: It has occurred to me that quite a number of these were just rebadged, painted or cloned Mini-Madness units. There may be other retail sources, but this is just the result of my own research to figure out what I should get. I’m throwing it out in case it could save someone else some time with Google. It appears to me that there are at least 5 discrete manufacturers:
- Pilo
- Pipercross
- Minimania
- Mini Madness and clones
- Alta
Randy Webb at Minimotorsport has a helpful review of 3 of them that he sells at his site (link included in my list). If I buy one of those 3, I’ll probably do it through him to help support all the R&D he is so freely sharing with all of us on MCO, especially if I install it in conjunction with one of his pulley parties. (And, just when were you coming to San Antonio or Austin, Randy!?)
The Alta unit is the only one that is substantially different than the rest. It appears to be more radical that the others in its use of a new pipe and how much more of the stock airbox it replaces (3 vs. 2 sides). That’s probably too radical for me personally.
I’m also looking at just replacing the stock air filter, but haven’t made a decision what I’m going to do yet.
