finally got it together-seems to work well, but after 2 weeks of hellish hot weather here, its now in the 70's but I'm sure it will heat up again and I will get a feel for the improvement on the heat soak issues.

Pretty stinkin sweet Scott!

Did you powder-coat the DFIC?

pberry51mini Aug 5, 2006 06:52 PM

Still waiting for mine.
Peter says soon - it's like waiting for Christmas.

Between what I've spent with you and M7 I've got to lay low now for a while.

At least a few weeks!!! HA!

agile_moments Aug 5, 2006 07:16 PM

nice piece! are the two bolts up front what holds the intercooler in place when the engine moves around?

Central Coast Coopers Aug 5, 2006 07:27 PM

painted

plain old red paint, unsure how it wil hold up, time will tell.

actully, the two bolts hold the front "air diverter" piece, which pushes back slightly on the i/c. this i/c just bolts on and "floats" there between the seals, as the airflow is front to rear, exact placement in line with the scoop is slightly adjustable with the side seals before you tighten them.

Nice setup! I love my DFIC but I have a a question and some help possibly.

The question is, while i realize it looks sweet, why did you pain it red? The color may look nice but does nothing to help the heat issue. It can actually be a detriment to heat build up under the hood.

As for the bolt question with the movement of the intercooler Dave from DDM (since I will take no credit for this) made a simple bracket that bolts to an old factory lcoation under the right boot clamp next to the IC. This stabilizes the intercooler from moving around much at all and helps very much.

good idea

on the clamp-I haven't spent any time looking into that as yet. as for the paint, I don't think it makes a huge difference-black powedercoat, probably a bad idea-2 thin coats of automotive paint, unlikely a burden. but then, I'm no engineer either. edit-you will note only the end pieces and top and bottom plate arepainted-not the cooling fins.

keeyu Aug 5, 2006 07:47 PM

damn that is cool..more pic of the exterior.

FlynHawaiian Aug 5, 2006 08:40 PM

No the DFIC also floats (like the GTT) between the boots. the two bolts hold on the front diflector.

Central Coast Coopers Aug 6, 2006 08:30 AM

hmmmmm-so-

it would appear M7 doesn't expect the DFIC to need additional support, and it seems pretty well situated on my car. OTOH, a mostly unseen brace is easily fabbed out of one of the stockers. It does seem to me, with the way the boots seem prone to leakage, holding it steady in one spot would be good. I will post some more pics later, with my bracket.
good idea, Chris :) :) :)

That looks great  Good work.

Would love to hear your impressions after you have it for a bit.

10 minute bracket fab and install

here is the bracket, fabbed with a cut on one of the original front brackets. the paint job could have been a little nicer, but I was 8 minutes into it when i got out the paint can and I wanted to keep this down to a 10 minute job!!! When I get to the shop tomorrow, I will take it off and make the cut a little nicer and touch it up-then I will have 20 minutes into it!!

Bahamabart Aug 6, 2006 09:41 AM

so your favorite color is ????????? RED  . Dam sunglasses are mandatory when you pop that hood  .

Report back on your driving impressiones. Do you have a boost guage? any changes in boost?

DarkMiniCooperS Aug 6, 2006 11:20 AM

That's no wait. Heck, I've been waiting since the prototype was on my car and I was sculpting the scoop. Now that's a WAIT. But, I know it is worth the wait.
I spoke with Peter this evening. Looks like early next week for me.

MSFITOY Aug 7, 2006 07:48 PM

You can also use Alta's silicone IC boot with the DFIC as I have...that does an excellent job of locking it into place:)

Are these necessary, or can I just use the stock rubbers?

Stock boots works just fine but make sure you remove all traces of oil or they might slip off during side to side movement under boost...
