I just don't get the N02 thing
 
I can not really understand the NO2 thing...... to me it is like an athlete taking a shot of adrenaline (sp?) before he lifts weights or runs the 100. ...... it is not sustainable...... can't modulate it .... to me it is "fake power." ....... fun for the drag strips, but that is it........ to post a big number whp with NO2 but a small number wo NO2 is pretty telling. now a turbo that can produce those kinds of numbers really blows me away......hell even Viagara can last 4 hrs. (how big is your bottle?)

It has its uses--especially when combined with a turbo to suppress detonation and cool the intake charge, it can produce far more power than the turbo alone on gasoline you can easily buy. The dirty secret of those high HP turbo cars is they require race gas to produce that kind of power, so is that really sustainable too? It depends.

The original use for nitrous was to give prop-driven fighter planes an extra boost of speed in emergency situations. It provides real power for sure, but in a car, it is best reserved for the drag strip or passing on straights due to its limited duration. The old Saab turbos were rated for a certain HP for a number of minutes, degrading to a steady-state power level. This was required due to heat management issues and the available quality of fuel. No matter how good the fuel is, increasing boost will similarly find its limits, so there are upper limits to the HP a turbo can produce.

Don't be misled by the low HP numbers off the bottle, because engines designed for nitrous are primarily designed for ruggedness, since HP is only limited by durability. And there is the alternate strategy of only using nitrous to reduce the lag from a big turbo. Don't forget it is relatively cheap, does not affect normal drivability, and lots of fun!

BTW Cialis works for 36 hours.

The doc gave me some for a pinched sciatic nerve. Now I know why those guys hit 70 homeruns. First couple of days, you fly ...never had so much energy. They usually give a 7 day supply. Even after 7 days your just cruising along. A week later you crash ... I would think of NO2 as a short term steroid!

I hear ya. I felt a bit like that too. Then I took a ride in a car with a bottle.:eek: It went from sporty to beastly at the touch of a button. I agree that it's not for everyone, but if you want to build a real sleeper on the cheap... it ain't a bad way to go.

I'm not likely to do it, but I understand the people who do.:wink:

I see where you are coming from spider. But however you look at it horsepower is simply controlled by how much air and fuel you can cram into the cylinders. With nitrous you just have to refill the bottle all the time.

You pretty much summed up why I am adding a turbo. With nitrous you can't modulate it and it doesn't last long. It all depends on how you are going to use the car. If you want to remove the testacles from corvette and porsche drivers, in short stents of open road, then N2O is what you need. If you are going to open track days then you need to go another route.

IT IS A MEDICAL EMERGENCY if you get one for more than a few hours! It's called priapism, and if the blood stays there, you can get necrosis [it will ROT]. FYI. The doctor speaks. :wink:

haha i would love to press a little button and do that to alot of people, not even in cars. but seriously i do see the perks of having NO2, but i would still want a turbo.

I don't doubt that at all. However if that's all you are interested in, for around $700 you can make just as much horsepower as with a twincharge kit.

Obviously, most people would choose a turbo if it didn't cost thousands more, and (for most people) require a cross-country trip to get installed.

Then again, I could also say that I don't understand people who would buy:

After looking at this thread for at least 5 hours....waiting for someone to say
something......But ohhhh no not a word.:roll:

Let's look at the potential of NO2 shall we.

The NO2 system that you have so diligently installed for the last 8 hours
is ready for the innagural kick someones a** and possibly embarrass every Honda/ ricer in town.

But before the big event, you have to go to the "Gas place" you know the
place with all those strange looking cylinders and frozen valves....it's a magic place if you like to go fast, or if a numb face is your choice of fun:thumbsup:

You walk up to the Man hand him the black bottle, and with the excitement of a man who is going to kick a** with his MINI you tell him proudly "Fill her up with NO2. He fills her up, and with excitement
you install the bottle, and with that you are ready to to take on anything with 4 wheels.

You are coming to a stoplight and a Honda S2000 pulls up next to you,
wow dude, this is it, you arm the system and rev the engine..... :eek2: :eek:

By now about half of you kind of figured out what I was going to say....
NO2 = Nitrogen Dioxide, which will kill the engine. N2O = Nitrous which is incredible when used properly Moral of the story don't believe everything you read.....

I couldn't agree more....... I have said it often....if I had known then what I know now, my car would have been a turbo..... I got caught believing published HP improvement numbers and thought they were additive. I thought I was building a 265 hp car.......now that is funny:roll: not ........spent a ton of $ and really could have quit at 15% CAI and exhaust and had 80 -90% of what I have now. Knowing now that that the mods do not add up in a linear fashion but rather some serious compression takes place....... My advice ....... if you want a fast Mini, go turbo early.

back to the topic........ I guess as a "toy" for fun kind of thing it would be cool to freak out the "corvette" crowd, I still don't think of it as real power. Steroids would be more analogous to race gas IMO, this is adrenaline.

I think when I see posts of nitrous dynos I get a little twisted.....I need to adjust my thinking a little.......thanks to all for helping with my perspective

So, if it's a little hard for you, then perhaps you should try it. You've put more energy than most into the car. Why not a little nitrous? Maybe getting over aversions and dislikes by facing them head on might not be a bad idea in this case. Just think what your dyno numbers might be like with nitrous.:)

The most important thing to remember about nitrous is:

NOS is a brand name! Their name is spelled out N-O-S. IT IS NOT PRONOUNCED NAWS! Also, not all nitrous systems are from NOS. There are a boat-load of system manufacturers out there:

TNT
N-O-S
Nitrous Express
Venom
Compucar
Nitrous Works
Top Gun (old school)
ICE (real old school)
Wilson
10,000 RPM (my favorite plate systems)

For future reference, you may refer to nitrous as: nitrous, nuke, spray, the hose, the s-hit, 'a system', the jug, the bottle. Any of these are acceptable to say around seasoned racers so you don't sound like a ricer.
