Sprayer for Top Mounted Intercooler

Does anyone have suggestions for water sprayers for a top mounted intercooler. I have a Alta Intercooler that uses the Windshield wiper fluid.
good Idea, but it just does feel cool, spraying your intercooler on the line. And watching your rear windshield wiper going back and forth.
I would like to install a separate motor and switch.

Something I want to implement, but haven't had time...

Mount 2 or 3 windshield washer nozzles at the opening of the hood scoop to spray into hole and onto intercooler.

Run a water line back to the boot where you can have a cooler/vessel with ice water in it to draw from.

You can put an electric washer pump back there to run from 12V outlet and use a regulator in the water line to control the flow.

You need to figure how much water is enough for maximum cooling before you start wasting water. This would be your maximum flow needed.

If you are using on track, say 20-30 minute runs and can control flow so your cooler full of water will last the amount of time on track.

If you are using for street use you can control power to pump with toggle switch or momentary switch on pedal for wide-open-throttle.

Remember you heard all this here 1st, so anyone trying to patent this... it's my idea.

Or just buy an aquamist setup.

Do you know how much the stage 1 cost?

I think its pretty expensive but I'm not sure of the price. JLM has one.

Here's A Nice DIY How To if you're into that.

Look at the Subaru forums. The STi comes standard with an I/C sprayer. Complete stand alone system. Separate tank, pump, switch, etc.

Both the DIY and the Product reference are for water injection, which is different from spraying water on the top mount inter cooler.
However they gave me some ideas...

After an email exchange with Jack Friedman, GM at UNIChip, and Randy Webb last night (Bay Area Pulley Party IV), I got confirmation that the UNIChip will be able to control both an Aquamist, and an IC sprayer. When switched on (toggle or rocker of some type), both can be activated when a specified IAT is reached/exceeded, or one could do WOT I suppose, but I like the IAT trigger. Each can fire at the same time, alternate, or some other type of desirable combo...

I will be building a IC sprayer where the tank resides in the rear boot, driver-side compartment area. It appears that I can fit a custom made 5 quart container (still need to design and fab) in that open space behind the paneling. I can have the fill point be where the rear 12v cig lighter would have been on my MCS, or if I want to go higher (more volume), I've thought about using the openning where the top of the rear seats anchor (ie, where the Pilo Stress Bar mounts). My rear seats are history...

The motor and sprayer nozzles are going to be sourced at McMaster; Peter of M7 directed me to some ideal equipment to make this happen. I was going to utilize the horn buttons for activation of the IC sprayer, but after getting confirmation that the UNIChip can and will address this via mapping, I might put the horns back, or an aftermkt horn...

the system 1 Aquamist kit I got in addition to an arming switch, came with a user settable pressure switch; when the manifold reaches, say 10psi, it triggers the spray.When I tried it out on the Helix dyno, it made absolutely no difference. Now that could be because:
I wasn't using enough water (I used the small jet);
I was injecting before the throttle body instead of at the exit of the intercooler;
I wasn't getting reduced power due to detonation and ignition retard, so the water didn't have any impact.

I think MSFITOY has the best solution here when he hooked his sprayer up to his nitrous.

Sid, if you happen upon this post, have you tried this yet?

Stever and all,

Data published on NAM by Andy shows engine power output decreasing by 8 HP as the IAT increases from 113 degrees F to 140 degrees F. I started to think of ways to reduce MINI's IAT. I wanted a robust system that would run without maintance for track days.
Built and installed an intercooler sprayer based on the Alta air diverter and spray nozzle. Used a 80 PSI Surflo RV water pump, a dedicated 1/2 gallon water reservoir, a McMaster-Carr precision water valve #48995K31, and a "Hobbs" style manifold pressure switch. I went for it, but gave up on the intercooler sprayer after a short period for two reasons.
After some thought and research, I concluded that a water injection system offered considerably more IA cooling potential due to the 540cal/gm latent heat of vaporization of water if the injected water vaporizes. The intercooler sprayer water didn't seem to vaporize very much, just conducted heat and dripped off the intercooler.
The intercooler sprayer was touchy and difficult to "optimize". Too much water and my reservoir emptied too quickly, and some water would find its way out of the hood scoop and on to the windshield. "Just enough" water would frequently fizzle out and I had to continously adjust the water valve small amounts to get a good flow. Not what I had envisioned!
Have now installed and have in operation a water injection system located at the outlet of the intercooler. No fuss and but no performance data yet. Discussion of this system would be more appropriate on some other thread. Check out this website and related links for authoritative information on water injection theory and systems: http://www.coolingmist.com/
I don't think that an intercooler spray system offers significant potential to reduce IAT and in reality is not robust enough to be practical.

Regards,
John Petrich in Seattle

John, thank you... I have now heard from a few folks that an IC sprayer is not as effective at droping IATs as what you shared (injection). I was still going to do both, but it just seems not worthwhile, given the work that I would need to do, and the minimal gains achieved...

Indeed, I suggest a new thread on this! Especially if you can share a photo or two with us, and ultimately some performance data . I'd still want to put the reservoir in the rear to keep it cool, for increased volume (more space), and more deisrable weight-distrubution...
