Has anyone completely removed their muffler(s) and replaced them with a just a pipe and tip? Ricer and 5.0 owners do this all the time and I wonder if it really helps. I know there's some worry about the valves burning up, but I think the cat provides enough backpressure. I was reading this supertrap thread on The Other Site and seems that the less backpressure there is, the more HP the MCS can give, which is usually the case with any car.
I'd love to rip out the whole muffler and get on a dyno, has anyone out there done this?

While dyno testing with George of MINI-Madness I asked that very question. He said he tried a straight pipe and lost TONS of torq. Modifier beware.

Helix Minisports reported the same thing. Their third prototype was basically a straight back design. It sounded great. It was light weight. But there was no power gain.

R, didn't one our Canadien friends drive down with a straight pipe? (the Red one ...)
I think he said on the Interstate it was great ... but maybe not around town!

I forgot about that. Supertrap does say something about increasing torque by removing discs and increasing peak HP by adding discs. I guess that lowered backpressure decreases torque. Hmmm. Thanks for the tip Davbret.

Yes it was Guillaume (sp?)
He said it took off about 30 Lbs
I don't think he had a negative comment about it. He was like our trumpeter for the bridge run. You could hear him loud and clear
