Anyone see what K&N wants for the new cold air intake system. $439.00 K & N And they want $69.00 for just a filter. Why do I think these aftermarket companies are trying to rip us off !!! At that price I will keep my $169.00 BMP Intake.

I don't get it. Is it relocating the intake outside the engine bay? Where does cold air come into the picture?

Here's the pic

I don't think that is the actual Cooper S kit, just a guess. Those parts don't make any sense to me in relation to the Cooper S engine bay.

Hello,

We have a drop in filter for the 'S' version car. Tests consistantly show higher rates of air flow through foam type filters than K&N style. Especially on boosted cars such as the 'S'. Our price is $39.99 including shipping and is available right now. Thanks for allowing the shameless plug!

The K&N kit was very easy to install. It took me about 35 min to do. It made a big differencein performance. I got mine from a local car shop for a very good price.

A) C'mon, how much cheaper?

B) How much faster? Do you know anyone with the BMP or Rogue that you could compare it too? Better yet, a dyno?

You can get the K&N for $260
here.

Makes you wonder what wholesale is for the thing! Now answer me a question. What's the difference between the two intakes that they offer for the S?

Weird. What's a "truck performance" shop doing with all those MINI parts (and at reasonable prices too)? And better still, why aren't more MINI tuners carrying those (at similar prices)?

Thanks for that link. That's very interesting.

If you're talking about what I think you are, then there are 4 models, and the difference is color

I haven't seen the AEM before... for 145$ 5 HP/7 lb ft Torque is not too bad, but I don't see the K&N having the parts to justify even 260$, but the gains of 8-10 HP/10 ft lbs Torque, if that's at the wheels is pretty significant.

I get kind of bugged by all the hype. I wish there was a consistent
source of info. on aftermarket parts. One site claims this, one that.
I bought something based on what I read one place then find out
that something else, apparently, is better.
That is it. I'm moving to Denver.

But being a mile high, you lose a bit of power...

So does everyone else, though, so at least it's a level playing field (unless your car is turbocharged with an absolute altitude of 5280' or more)

The loss in power is worth the roads available to us here in Colorado! You just can't beat the twisties - and the views!

Portland ain't too shabby right now, either! We have Altaperformance and MINI-Madness based here, as well as PDX MINI Cooper Club. And we are only a touch over sea level, so there!

Hmmm. More of my memory must have disappeared since the Seventies than I originally thought.

I thought they were Rorer 712s and then Lemmon bought them out and they were no longer 712s and then... well, I can't remember next.

"All the young dudes, carry the ludes..."
Quick name that singer and song. If you can, you're at least as old as I am (can AARP really just be a few years away?) and you actually remember Glitter Rock and Glam.

Back to K&N and their pricey intake. I'll admit something embarassing <shhh, don't tell anyone off this board>... on the last few modified cars that my wife and I have had, we have had Tornado air management systems installed. Their website is sort of hokey (www.tornadoair.com), but the real killer is when I say a late night infomercial on Tornado-- I almost sprayed out my beer... er, Pepsi, when I saw that. On the 3 cars we put them on (Acura Integra, Jetta, BMW club racer-- all modified) the "butt dyno" seemed to indicate a slight increase in each case and well worth the seventy bucks or whatever. I really, really wish I would have had them dyno-tested since the Tornado WILL work on someone's standard Cooper, but will NOT work on the Cooper S - which we have - due to the layout of the intake and supercharger and the airflow pattern.

Basically, the founder of Tornado explained it to me many years ago thusly:

"If you put sugar in ice tea, you stir it so that it will mix better. When you add air to fuel in your engine, the Tornado stirs it so that it will mix better." Seems to make sense to me.

Why do I bring this up? Because looking at K&N's diagram makes it appear that they are using the same principle as the Tornado gizmo.

Now was it 712 or 714...
