HELP! Helix SS install going south

So I'm trying to install this Helix short shifter, and have run into a problem. I got the SS onto the shifter shaft, and when I tighten the set screw it only tightens down a few turns because it is running into just about the widest part of the ball on the shift lever. I figure this isn't right, and back out the screw all the way to make sure I've got it installed all the way. Nope, that's as far as it will go.

I snug it down, and it just doesn't feel right. I pulled the SS off, and discovered that I had tightened it too much, and stripped out the threads  If you look at the pic below, you can see that the set screw doesn't fit into the SS properly.

So, I've got 2 questions about this:

1. Should the set screw sit on the back half of the shift level ball, or right on the side?

2. If it does sit on the side, would it be a dumb idea to try and use this somewhat screwed up SS? In it's current state, the screw will still contact the ball, and seems reasonably snug.

Thanks

Mike

Give Eric at Helix13 a call at 1-877-HELIX13 and explain your problem first thing tomorrow morning. He should be in.

Something else I noticed - look at the position of the set screw on the shaft of my SS and the pic of one on the Helix site. The screw in the pic from their site looks like it is further away from the ball than the one I've got.

Yeah, that was my plan if I couldn't get any info on this tonight. Thanks

I hope you have the correct version of the SS kit for your MINI.
The two parts in the pictures are for the old and newer versions as pictured in the Helix13.com site.
Good luck.

I spoke to Helix this morning and they were very helpful. We confirmed I have the right kit and the right setscrew, and the screw is supposed to hit the ball where it is hitting, and stick out as far as it's sticking out.

I'll just use this as a good excuse to get a tap and die kit  , and retap the threads and install it. Thanks to Minihune for the help last night.
