Can't see how you can go wrong w/ a Dinan Elite (if one still has or wants to maintain their warranties). May not be the hottest, but certainly one of the safest IMO.

Point well taken, IMHO. Also an oft-used argument for the factory JCW tune kit.

Already have the Tuning Kit. And returning the map to stock before service appointments would actually be easier than removing a one plug tuning box. You won't even have to lift the hood.

By the way, I just saw the Dinan add for 15% off. Elite direct from factory $745.

Very true, and price being the main reason I will opt for the Dinan Elite on my next Mini instead of the Factory JCW tune.

You held out on the Elite, good for you!!
I’m holding on to my refunded Elite money, for maybe this!!

I’m familiar with OBD flashing.
Had tuning for my G37 , a simple PC program.
Maybe the same here!

This is a great example of how quickly the world can change! Also a case study in why there's no such thing as "one size fits all."

I continue to get a lot out of my Dinan Sport -- single input tweak is working well for the way I drive.

Now that the Elite price is softening a wee bit (early adopters often get burned on price but most understand that going in), it is a valid, if not most intense, option for many, especially for those who may have warranty concerns.

We will now see the door open for OBD reversable tunes that don't require DME removal.

And then the folks doing the JB4 are suddenly thinking a DME flash plus the JB4 might be the best of all possible worlds.

And the JCW tune folks, like the Bytetronik early adopters, can contemplate stacking a plug in on top of a tune and push things that much further. (some have done so already).

This is actually getting interesting.... again.

Please keep reporting everyone. We all benefit from everyone else's adventures.

That's some weird stuff, Dinan undercutting ECS so soon after ECS had 10% off. Wonder what's going on.

I like it either way, Elite works for me. Still under warranty don't need to mess with ECU tunes.

Im sure Dinan makes more from direct sales then they do through a reseller

no doubt on how things move in the automobile world. I literally bookmarked the Elite and was going to pull the plug this evening ...... then the upcoming OBD tune thread came out. Man, I love cars

I love my elite , very happy I uograded from Sport . I wouldn’t doubt one bit that Dinan offers a flash for our cars at some point . There is a new flash tool out there now marketed by some European software companies for tuners to buy . Many of these outfits will jump on the bandwagon to offer flash tunes , still I think the Dinan unit is a great upgrade

Keep in mind, if you are flashing the ECU vs adding a piggyback unit, it’s traceable even if you flash it back to stock before a service visit. According to a BMW service manager that I spoke with, they can’t see exactly what was done to the car but they can see it was tampered with outside of a service visit.

I had a 2015 Mustang before the Mini that had a tune on it when I blew the engine at 11k miles. I’m very fortunate that Ford honored the warranty. At the time, there were several other people on the Mustang forum that had also blown engines so they may have had a bigger issue on their hands.

I cant imagine you would need a piggy back if you have a flashed ECU tune

If you ask a BMW/Mini Service Manager they will also tell you that they can tell if a piggyback was installed too. If you're paranoid about warranty then by all means stick to the stock or JCW tune. I have yet to hear of a blown engine (Mini) caused by a piggyback tune because they can't/don't take it past a point that the ECU can't compensate for by retarding timing, fuel, etc. The Byteronik OBD tune is a stage 1 tune, and a stage 1 tune is not a "ragged edge" take it to the limit tune. I will hazard a guess and say that it won't cause any more problems than a good piggyback spoofer. Just my opinion, but I'm willing to risk the remaining year and a half and 50K miles of warranty on my opinion. If Byteronik were some fly-by-night outfit with little or no reputation to speak of I would probably have a different outlook.

As for your second paragraph...... well, ...mustang.

But, But... if I had the ECU tune and added the Elite and somehow managed to massage the NM Module in the mix I'd have to be on the lookout for some of the worlds smallest wrinkle-wall slicks just to pull off the line. Have to be at LEAST 800 tiny horses there!

Just kidding folks, don't try this at home.

But, eight...hundred....horses....

If we can't have that, may we at least try this at home instead:

Thats not the norm for manufacturers to undercut their retailers.

So I did a little datalogging today. Car is a 2017 JCW only mod is Dinan Elite. I didn't do any data logging previously. This was the result of both hammering it through second gear in addition to a 6th gear build up starting at a low speed. Of course it's calculated and who knows how accurate any of this is. Peak boost of 17.261psi. So far the car runs completely like a stock car but much stronger. With that said, I'm already wanting for more power. The never ending struggle.

For some reason my Dinan Sport must know I was considering stepping up to the Elite. It's been acting better of late. Might be the cooler weather, might be that days are starting to get longer now that the winter solstice has happened, might be the winter blend gas here in SoCal. Might just all be in my head. But the Sport is doin' it for me and I'm gonna stay with it for now.

What promise to be top flight true ECU tunes are here. Probably a good way to go if one doesn't fear dealer possible (but I think unlikely) warranty conflicts.

I'm going to enjoy my Dinan Sport for the remainder of my current lease and, if my next car is a MINI, depending on what's available and what sort of power increases the next cars have, I might make a bolder choice.

Many thanks to everyone who provided reports of their experiences and their decision processes for this thread. What a great group of power junkies! Cheers to all.
