Pilo Racing - Full Engine Build (Pistons all the way up)

Well, the first stage of our engine build is complete. Complete teardown of a stock MCS Engine. We have some suprises in stock with this project. Many people are collaborating to make one of the most powerfull engine on a Mini to date.

This is going to be a full build to develop internal engine parts for the Mini Cooper S. We are raising the compression slightly, Increasing the rod strength, Making Secret Custom Pistons (that will be available once complete)

This should be an interesting project from begining to end. If you have questions or comments, let me know, and I will do the best I can to answer them. We do not want to give all our secrets away:-)

If you want to see how rich the MCS really runs, check out this piston picture.

You definitely didn't write this on a Mac, they have built in spell checkers.

To my knowledge, this engine was stock, no ECU Change. Also, had about 8-9K miles on it.

We are looking at the head gasket to figure out what to do with it, if any thing.

And yea.. no MAC here, but that is a bit off topic :-)

They do loose business if there's enough of us. Oh wait, they never lost my business, they didn't have in the first place Back to topic, this is going to be an interesting build to follow.

This is not an "M7" thing. We are working to develop a custom design piston, and until we have the finished design, we do not want to give out our plans. We will give the info and pictures out at that point. Please be patient as we are in the early stages of the design, and proper design will take some time.

If any one out there has a wish list for engine internals, now is the time to bring that us as well. We are doing all the development now, and will work on what ever we can, and if there is a demand for a certain item, we will investigate it.

Thanks
Dan

Is this for a racing-only engine?

We plan to keep this car streetable.

Basically, MINI cut cost on the pistons, not designing it to flow optimally with the valves. They kept it low to avoid contact, and such. We plan to do some things a bit diffrent, and increase compression slightly in the end increasing the efficiency and flow of the engine.

That being said, The exact way that we are going to do that is going to be held until we are done designing.

Regarding the streetability, we plan to keep it within Emissions legality, and such. But as with any major upgrade, there will be a slight sacrafice between performance and streetability.

Hope this answers some questions, but let me know if you have any others.

Dan,

Interesting project.
If you do this major redo of the engine then how will it work with the stock ECU software vs aftermarket ECU software? Or are you doing or planning to do work on tuning one of the ECU upgrades specifically for your project?

Are you working at strengthening the engine internals as well? I know that AmD blew up an engine twice trying to push it past 400hp. I also heard the BBR also blew at about 400hp. It would be intersting to see what broke on them, see if it was the same components and then strengthen them.

Regarding our project, We are probably going to go with some sort of standalone setup, or one with the ability to modify fuel and timing. We will do testing with stock ECU though as we also have a spare ECU. We may also test aftermarket ECU tuning if they become avalable to us.

Regarding stregthening, we are also replacing the rods with a stronger version. That should help with the failing engines. I will have to research what blew on the eninges to better have an idea what needs to be increased.

Are you going to have that car Ax-able by this fall?

Just wondering... if you are doing a major overhaul... any room to get more displacement from the engine?

We will be at Auto X, but probably not with the new engine until spring. We plan to finish in the fall, but have many things to do with it still, as well as the time it is going to take to proto type the pistons.

We are building very strong pistons and rings, so that should net be an issue with the 19% but we will fully test it to make sure.

We are not working on displacement, just efficiency. The walls are already pretty thin, and we do not want to sacrafice engine block longevity, or durability. We might look into the crank shaft though to see if it can be stroked a bit more, but we are not sure yet.

Will do, The pistons are getting computer designed as we speak, and prototypes should be done next month.

This is an interesting concept.
First, would it work?

Second, how would one go about doing this if it worked or do you just stack multiple gaskets?

Third, Longevitv issue?

Since we are redesigning the pistons, all the changes will be from them.
