I'll be honest with you. I don't fully understand this post.

Can't help but agree...

Copypasta is copypasta.

Bought a USED car without a warranty. There is a reason USED cars are cheaper than new. Geeze, get over it.

Could have been killed ? Really ?

Haha -- honesty is the best policy. Lets leave out the fact that many lines of the same article were quoted over and over....but focus on the facts:

1) the car was purchased from a VW (not BMW entity) that told her the car was in great shape.

2) there is no back story here on the treatment of the car, the maintenance, etc..

3) "Finding refurbished engines on the internet for $1700-3000 is like chasing Unicorns.. There are no such things as refurbished engines for $3000. Even if there were at that price it would be sitting on crate waiting for you to come pick it up and self install it. I've never done an engine install but I would imagine its at least a 20 hour job including tearing all down, putting it all together etc.. At BMW/MINI rates of $150 an hour -- thats another $3,000 dollars.

^Precisely^, or $2k at a MINI shop with lower hourly rates. Ask me how I know:wink:.

Bought used, no reference to service history, no aftermarket warranty. Buyer beware, or pay the consequences!

Yep.

Would not buy a used MINI without extensive service history.

I feel confident that I could do a thorough enough pre-purchase inspection to know whether the car is a good investment. The trained eye can easily see what maintenance has been done or not done.

A PPI from a trusted professional technician will give you the knowledge to make an informed buying decision.

This is also true.

But jumping into a used MINI with no history and no PPI? You cray.

I bought my 56 from a buy here pay here lot and had to replace the engine about 10,000 miles later. Cost me about 4500. But i did it all myself. As someone posted above it took me about 20 hours......and two six packs....and a pack of paint markers....

It pays to have a used car examined by a qualified mechanic BEFORE it is purchased. The charge is $90.00 by the shop I go to and takes them about 1 1/2 hrs. Having this inspection has saved me a lot of aggravation and money when buying a used car.
