I just started following this thread. I am very much a novice on all mechanical issues but am looking into a CAI for my MCS.

Here is an idea... It seams like the biggest gain in performance with the HAI is that the filter is very close and has a very short path for the air to travel. What would be the thoughts on a system that "forces" more air into the intake? Some type of blower inside the intake system...

Won't really work.

Actually

it should work just fine.... this is the principle behind any forced induction system. Search on "eRam" and "electric supercharger" for some interesting reads....

There is someone who put one on a Cooper and found a benefit, but I don't know if he quantified it.

twin charging makes more power. so any sort of added forced air into the t-body will help make more power. it's the same principle.

Bad news!

I took off my K&N 1550 today to clean it. It rests up against the supercharger horn and the horn has pushed in the filter and caused three tinny holes. It's not burned or melted, so heat isn't the issue, but the heat could have softened it and allowed it to get pushed in, along with the engine moving around and rubbing on it. Also I think when the hood is closed it pushes the filter against the horn. I don't know what I should do. I'm not going to buy a new filter everytime it needs to be cleaned. Should I try the 1540? I saw a pic from another thread and it looks like it doesn't rest up against the horn and it's shorter.

P.S. I was wrong. I just put the filter back on and it must have been resting up against the bottom part of the original filter box. It isn't resting against it now, so the hood must push it down on the edge of the box. You can't see the damage till you take the filter off. I think I'll try the 1540 and see what happens.

It's round with a 2 3/4" ID flange that is 1" high with a 10 degree angle. It is 6" high with a 4" diameter. I think it will fit better. Being round and a 4" diameter, I can spin it 360 degrees to get the flange to fit better on the throttle body, and it shouldn't hit the horn or the bottom of the air box or the inside of the hood. It is smaller but it should still be better then stock, and a proper fit is the most important thing. You can find all the K&N dimensions here http://www.superexhaust.com/cgi-bin/...580c93a5ccd98a .

One of my friends has an RU-1540 so I tired it yesterday. The flange doesn't fit down over the TB in the front. I don't know why because my 1550 fits over it and it has the same flange. In fact it's the same filter only 1" shorter. Im going to try the 1470 next.

I opted to have the breather hose enter the bottom of the filter. Buoght this PVC elbow at Pep Boys for $3. Installed it by cutting a hole in the bottom of the filer with an exacto knife. I'm very please how it turned out!

I'd give this mod an A+ due to its low cost and added driving fun!
Is it friction fit or did you permanently attach it? Size of elbow (ID/OD etc). Plan to install mine when I get back to town in a couple of weeks.

I forgot about this thread!

I did put on an RU-1470 back in December. It is a little smaller but it fits in perfect. I also put on an optional foam wrap over the filter. The performance is the same as the larger K&N filter that I had on before, I can't remember the model # right now. Make sure to tighten the clamp about once a month, it works its way lose.

....so 25 pages to this thread and not one person has done a before/after dyno of the HAI by itself?

"Elbow" search failed

OK, went to Pep boys today as well as an Autozone trying to find an elbow so I could plug the breather line back into the filter (trying to be "green"...blame my wife's influence ). Found nothing even close...can someone confirm that the hose is 0.5" ID and 0.75" OD?

Please, can anybody point me to a part number that will work? I'm not much of a wrench turner but trying to learn to do this kind of stuff on my own...

Read earlier where somebody used heater hose and a heater-hose connection elbow. More details would be appreciated...such as, how did you cionnect the breather line to the heater hose?

Leaving town tomorrow but anxious to install my HAI as asoon as I return.

Certainly easier, but I don't want to do that. More emission friendly to feed it back into the filter.

look here.

Long and short, no more power, but beetter response. If you do other things to control the hot air injested, you can get more power out of it.

depends...

on what you do to the engine bay/cowel partition. I left mine stock, and it's not that much louder. If you cut that up to get the advantage of the pressure there at speed, it's more like other CAIs....

Spend the $35 or so (www.ajusa.com) and see. If you don't like it you can move it via the Marketplace....

Mine stands on the cables. It could flop around under acceleration but not enough to hit anything hard enough to damage it, and the terminal is enclosed in plastic so there's no chance of a short.

How did you connect the line to the heater hose? What kind of elbow is that? I am dying to complete this mod but can't find either a breather filter that I know is the right size of an elbow.

I'm dying here!

doc; do you suppose if the stock box were bigger the responce would be better ? or is it the path on the hai is so much shorter ? i know with bikes manufacturers spend many hours on air box design and volume for just that reason .
