There's a place called PAW in FL. I called yesterday and told him my mods and he said he could get me 30-35whp. I wonder if I add a high-flow DP:-). They said $750. I'm still waiting on Evolve from U.K. to give me the okay signal for their tune. If not, BrenTuning will be receiving another call.

Catless DP is worth about 10WHP up top, and possibly a slight loss of TQ down low. (I have one thats why I say that).

30-35WHP sound like better gains.

The CM that got 212WHP is getting closer to the N14 power abilities.

I know, I think I'm gonna consider PAW. But I can't do the catless, it'll be too loud especially with my exhaust setup now lol. I think a high-flow by Evolve would be just perfect for my taste.

Talked to the owner of MINI Dynamics

So...

I have/had an offer on the table by MINI Dynamics owner, Scott Galloway, very nice guy to have offered me such a deal to help out his company with this Chiptune. I had to turn it down eventually because I just don't feel confident in the product, and I was honest about my opinion on the Chiptune. Don't get me wrong, if the MINI driver isn't looking for crazy numbers or a custom tune, then this is the tune for you guys. It was nice because Mr. Galloway told me he would let me do a 30 days trial of the tune and then do a review for the product. Yes, it was a good deal, but again for myself I couldn't come to gripes with it. Hopefully someone here will do it, because I would still be curious to see how it works out for them. Good luck guys!

There were a couple of countryman owners that tried it (do a search for racechip) and it didn't sound that great.

Renntech is as much as it is for a reason. You will get the most power and gains from them along with the fact they have been tuning cars for years successfully.

Maybe one day there will be a better solution for the N18.
I am working on it for N18 OBD =)

Alright folks, I just ordered one of these Race Chips up from the dudes at Mini Dynamics. I'll post up a review once I have had a chance to check it out.

I'll tell you up front that I don't have a dyno tuner in my city, but I'll give you an objective perspective on what the deal is.

I have a 2011 MCS with the following mods:
Cold air intake, 3" cat-back, blow-off adapter, intercooler, hot side boost tube.

I have been waiting for a less invasive tuning option, and first ran across this option earlier this afternoon. Can't wait to see what the scoop is!!!

Any suggestions for how to make a review more meaningful without dyno numbers (don't have access)?

My early thoughts are to get several of my auto buddies together and have everyone do a before and after drive, and then consolidate the comments from the group. Involving some people who didn't just spend money on it seems like a good start to create some objectivity.

If there are tangible gains in the realm of 20-40 horsepower, they should be easily recognized with the butt dyno. The RaceTune site guarantees no less than 20hp, but says that maximum gains of up to 47hp are possible (I assume if the car is modified appropriately). With the mods I have done (really only missing the DP) I would be happy with no less than something in the neighborhood of what feels like 30.

There are mods a guy does that you want to work so badly that you convince yourself that it was money well spent. And then there are mods that just straight up make a huge tangible difference. What I'm looking for is the second.

I'm curioous to know what it's going to be like off the line with a bit more power. Launching is already tricky. Then again, I expect that to improve when the pavement warms up a bit. We're still up to our ***** in snow here.

??

It's a test you can do before and after to have a quantifiable metric. How the times compare to other cars is irrelevant.

Agreed. I mean especially if the guy is doing a review on the product, it's good to know stuff like that. Motor trend and many others do this.

The 1/4 mile time is listed in the specs on the MINI website. I remember seeing 1/4 mile times for other brands I've purchased in the past too on the manufacturer's site or brochure. I agree, it provides a baseline for comparison.

When the company says 20 hp gain, it is likely talking about peak gains. It is probable that elsewhere in the range (not at peak numbers) the gain could be more than the 20 hp. I notice the low/midrange bump on my AP, from 2500-4500 is a nice surge compared to stock.

Maybe for your testing you could do a rolling accelleration test? Maybe 30 mph-60 mph in 3rd gear or something? Would second gear be better? This should eliminate any wheelspin concerns, and any variation in 1/4 mile driving. Have a passenger with a stopwatch and let them watch the speedo. Average several runs before and after the test.

Whaddya think?

Mike

Yeah that's a pretty good idea Mike. Wheel spin off a start when it's cool out would make the test more challenging to create any degree of consistency.

I'm glad to hear somebody MIGHT have found a way to KINDA tune you guys....
But a word of warning....
Looking at their website, it APPEARS it is just a PIGGYBACK (am I missing something?).....long history with MINI ECU's in the GEN1 cars, with it being VERY spotty..some swore by them...some has ..er..issues...I hope you have better luck!
RaceChip tuning facts:

RaceChip Ultimate gives you the benefits of a custom ECU Tune without voiding your warranty
RaceChip Ultimate produces an outstanding performance increase in both torque and hp
RaceChip Ultimate ships with 2 distinct wiring harnesses (N14 or N18) - with exact fit OEM connectors
RaceChip Ultimate connects to both MINI map sensors (before the throttle body and after the throttle body)

Traceless and easily removed for regularly scheduled service appointments
We have found no less than a 20 hp gain (ATW) on any of the MINI's tested with the RaceChip Ultimate.
We have found no less than a 34 ft lbs increase in torque (ATW) on any of the MINI's tested with the RaceChip Ultimate.

As I was one of the first people to get a piggy back from Alta way back when.. I am going to sit back and let someone else be a test pig this time.
