Hey guys excited to get my JB+ tomorrow, quick question. I don't feel like reading through to find it, approx. how many miles do you have to drive until it's completely working? Thanks!

You'll feel a difference immediately, 50-100 miles to adapt.

My car was the Countryman test Group4 car, and we're putting down 270 on an All4. Their GP is putting down quite a bit more, as are some of their other cars.

I'm running the mods in my sig (their oil cooler, plugs, tune, FMIC, turbo, etc).

Thoroughly pleased - no problems after a few thousand miles.

270 @ the wheels? What kind of turbo?

It's actually going to the body shop on Monday. My body guy (the only guy I'll allow to touch it) was super swamped with work and finally has time for me to drop it off. Unfortunately I'm out of town at work for several days now and am unable to bring it to him.

So according to Evolve Automotive US, they've recently started development on US-spec N18 engines. It looks like they're just scratching the surface of the N18 ecu, so it's going to be a while...Evolve says they'll post more when there's more to add. Just thought I'd make it known.

Things are starting to look up on the tuning front with the JB+ now on the market and a JB4 down the road. And now an Evolve N18 tune is very possible.

OF course Cracking of the N18 happens soon before a NEW FRIGGIN engine is coming

These things take time, it's not the tuners' fault that BMW cryptographically secured the ECU.

The DME encryption has nothing to do with it. The reason we have so few tunes is because the market is small. Cobb pulled out of the MINI market because the return on investment wasn't enough to justify developing a tuning solution for the N18. Initially Burger Tuning told me the same thing; that the MINI market wasn't big enough to justify their time. I'm glad that changed.

If you really think the ECU encryption is the reason we don't have tunes, consider that the BMW N20 was tuned weeks after it came out. The BMW DME is equally as cryptographically secure as the ones in our MINI's if not more so. The Nissan GTR was said to be untenable, but look how that turned out...

This ^ ^

The C7 Corvette was supposed to be equipped with one of the first un-crackable GM ECUs, but it was cracked before the first production model was ever shipped.

As you said, it's about demand and return. The N18s were a LCI change, and as such the numbers were going to be far smaller. With the handhelds out of the game, and the ability to OBD-tune out of the picture, the number of customers dropped dramatically.

That being said, we have no way to know about the tuning characteristics of the next engine - hell, there may be very little extra to squeeze. Or, it could be sky-high.

For now, everybody enjoy the options we have (as there are several now).

Seems like BT was able to adapt some of the tech they used for the BMW's they tuned to quickly get the JB+ working. Tell everyone you know that has an S N18 to get the JB+ so we can have more toys :D

Made my appointment to have my car taken in to RENNtech Monday with dyno time. I will be purchasing new plugs and their tune. Will post pics and any possible video I may record if they allow it. I think Lenny will be doing it.

Just read about a company claiming to do OBD ECU tuning for the N18 called ManicMini.com. Couldn't tell if they were UK based but it seemed so.

Maybe with the right resources and right company it can be done but until then we all shouldn't hold our breath.

Nothing is impossible. The most secure encryption in the world can be broken if you have enough computing power. The Corvette C7 ecu was said to be uncrackable when the car was announced. HPTuners had read/write access BEFORE the car was even released this year.

Remember the GTR and it's untunable ECU? Yeah, they cracked that one too. Our MINI's use the same DME as BMW's which several tuners have cracked. The MINI marked is small therefore no companies want to put the resources into making a product that won't sell very well. It has NOTHING to do wth the ECU encryption.

Exactly, keywords, "small market". Who knows maybe by next year there will be a OBD port to use for the R56+ generation.

Kinda like saying that my sound-only telephone now miraculously can show video. The hardware is physically absent to allow it.

But maybe there's more to it, or maybe it's a complete lie.
How would the dealer flash software fixes/updates to a car if there wasn't write access?
