Looks like Alta and B&M both have some redesigning to do on their shift kits for newer '04 model MINI's. I want a kit that leave the shift cover in place and I'd prefer one which won't alter the stock shift height. Is any kit out there offering this combo of features, or for that matter, any kits ready for the newer '04 MINI's?

I checked with Alta this morning and got a message back quickly. They still have been unable to verify the actual existance of a part number for the "new" '04 stock MCS shift lever. They are hoping that the March update to the BMW parts catalog will list the "new" shifter so they can order one immediately and get to work designing a short shifter exchange for our newer '04 MCS's. Apparently Alta has already been contacted by quite a few folk who are waiting for one. |

they have a short shifter that wont changes the hieghts, but reduces the throw. I just placed my order today for the 04 shifter. Eric at helix told me that its a few weeks out. they are in the machine shop now. give em a call! |
MINI-Madness also will have a new one for 2004 in a few weeks.
I wonder if both Helix and Madness have the same supplier. |
According to the website, the Helix unit makes you lose the plastic shift cover, while the Madness unit has some shrink tubing for protection, making it the one I'd prefer. The Madness kit is $60, the Helix $45. No, the Madness folks don't have the '04 model in yet.

with the Helix, if it makes you lose the plastic cover, how can I protect the shift linkage / gear box. Any suggestions?
also, how hard is the install? I was trying to take a look at it yesterday, but I didnt want to jack it up, at least until I have some instuctions. Thanks for the info all. |
MINI Madness offers one similar to Helix but has additional heat shrink wrap for more protection.
MINI Mania also has the similar design and comes with a cover to replace the original cover. It does cost more, but has total protection. Both Madness and Mania don't have the 04 version yet. |
I have installed one on an MCS. The car has to be jacked up at least the front end. DON”T USE THE JACK THAT CAME CAR WITH THE CAR! You must use jack stands or two floor jacks. The exhaust mount plate needs to be removed then the exhaust pipe has to be has to be disconnected at the cat flange and swung out of the way. I used a bungee cord to attach it to the frame. There’s quite a bit of play on the hangers to swing it out of the way. Once the heat shield is slid out of position the plastic box surrounding the shift links can be accessed. After removing the cable from the end of the shift attach the adapter and BE SURE NOT OVER TIGHTEN THE SET SCREWS on the adapters. I believe some of them are brass.
The additional length of the short shifter adapter makes it too long to replace the plastic cover. You can buy a piece of shrink wrap at an electronics store or a hobby shop if you buy an adapter that does not supply it. I think Mini Mania has a metal cover that you can rivet on to the original plastic cover. That seems to be the best solution over the shrink wrap if you’re concerned about the cover. Actually the heat shield provides enough cover it to keep dirt and moisture out. |

PSA: Getting crushed by cars is bad for your health. Always use jack stands |
