Drivetrain Dynomat info
Sound deadening is on my 2012 project list. Im gonna do the whole car and wheel wells with the mat stuff and closed cell foam. Should help improve the roadnoise, rattles and improve the audio.
Ive been wanting to do it since i bought my car 1.5 yrs ago. Ive done it on a lot of my past cars and always happy with the results. As long as you go into the project with realistic expectations (it's not going to come out like a Rolls Royce), then you will be happy.

I was reading on a car audio forum about guys using the asphalt stuff. Got a little concerned when I read that you have to air the car out for two full days because of toxic vapors. Kinda turned me off to using it, but I'll bet it's just as good as Dynamat.
For a period of time it seemed there was something going around with some of the local MINI owners and dynomat. I ended up doing quite a few. I was using the Hushmat stuff, think it was like 7-12 bucks a sheet. The back half of a MINI usually took up to 25 sheets depending on how crazy the owner wanted me to get.
Like others said it does little for drone, but any little creeks and rattles usually went away and road noise went down a lot even with run flats still on.
Here is an R53 that wanted the entire rear done.

A the time I was at Tech Division and the hourly rates were 95 an hour. If I recal we charged 2-6 hours depending on how extravagant it got.
Dynamat is NOT a sound barrier. if that's what you're trying to use it for you're going to add a crap-ton of weight because that's not what it's designed for. Something like Second Skin Luxury Liner and Luxury Liner Pro are better options. As is carpet padding (yes the stuff from a home carpet store), or even closed-cell foam. It's about the right tool for the job. Check out the Second Skin site for some better options for noise control than Dynamat.
After the dealer failed to eliminate an intermittent low speed rear rattle I used Raamat on the entire rear area and inside the speaker areas front and rear and it helped make the car quieter. I used their foam noise insulator on top of the deadener. I also used Quietcar which is a painted on deadener inside the fender wells which really helped reduce tire and road noise. You have to remove the fender liners first. However I still have a mystery low speed rattle from somewhere in the rear...
With Dynamat, Raamat etc you do not need or want to cover every square inch, the point is to make the metal panel dead, so it does not vibrate and transmit noise or rattle as much.

Before ANY of you goes and blows hundred or thousands of dollars coating the ENTIRE car to make it quieter, read the info at the link below. Don is absolutely right on and I've personally verified his process on a number of cars.

Dynamat it! I am now on my third MINI. Our 2012 is having the same sound issues as both the '05 and that of our '08. I told 866-ask mini it was kick-back in the harmonics of the HK sound system. All they need is to dynamat my car like they did the two previous cars. Problem solved!? But it seems that the hierarchy at corporate isn't going to fix it without a fight. Why can't they build a car right? A little insulation goes a long way, or is it a little plastic trim with chrome tape doesn't stand up in a car wash?! Oops, that's the moulding on the Countryman, and I digress! I could probably pay for it with all the monies lost trying to get corporate to do it right
