I know this topic was discussed some time ago and no one really indicated if they had ACTUALLY completed this mod. I am interested in doing this, but need instructions on where to locate proper wires and how to make connections. I would replace my cig. lighter with the button. Anyone done this yet? Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks......

So you want to do this I think:

1) Put the key in the ignition.
2) Turn the key to the "on" position.
3) Take your hand off the key and press a button in the lighter location.

Is that right?

If so, I can probably find the correct wires under the steering column for you in a week or so.

I've been wanting to do this to my MINI also, but isn't their a better place to put the button than replacing the Lighter? Just seems a little hard to reach. Obviously easier to install, but has anyone put one on the dash anywhere?

Just curious...WHY would you want to do this? I thought that what you wanted was to replace the whole ignition switch with a push-button; and then the problem would be bypassing the MINI's need to the chip-in-key to be in the current ignition switch (nesc. as part of the anti-theft protection). If you're going to have to use the key anyway, what's the advantage of using a push button to actually activate the starter?

Just to be different. Many classic car and also now new cars (retro) are comming out with push button starters. Even the 1953 MGTD I had used a key on the dash and a push button starter. Guess that was before someone invented a momentary key switch for the starter which is obviously more convenient but not everything is about convenience.

Ever think about using the open (or one of the open) toggle switch spots? That would really goof up a theif if they couldn't figure out how to start the thing!

I can't figure out why this post is in performance modifications, should definately be in interior/exterior mods.

What about the Ridiculous Mods forum? Currently being discussed is the Auto Filthy-Car function...

Yea, I was thinking maybe putting in an Aircraft style momentary red covered switch with the word "Start" on it. I've seen race cars with it.

Check it out:

Or, what the heck, why not do both a switch and a button:

Actually, no modifications are needed if you alter the procedure slightly:

1) Put the key in the ignition.
2) Turn the key to the "Start" position and start the car.
3) Take your hand off the key and press a button in the lighter location (the cigarette lighter)

4) *OPTIONAL* Light a cigarette/cigar/etc. with your now hot lighter.

I saw an add in a magazine of a new expensive car (don't remember which one) but the push button was under a flip cap on the shifter. if you could get someone to modify it like that it would be pretty sweet.

I kept waiting for someone to mention this, but I guess no one will. CTD (one of NAMS sponsors) has a red starter button with instructions for sale at

http://www.coopertuning.de/shop_e/cs...5&saSearch[category]=Interior&saSearch[word]=&saSearch[special]=&VID=zY0SpuG4lxwfLVpj

The cost is $115EU. Starter buttons are becoming more common on high end cars such as Porsche, Mercedes, Aston Martin....

Ok that has to the icing on the cake...this is the first time I have laughed out loud while reading the forums on NAM.

But really guys as someone has said before - Customizing a Mini is all part of ownership just as long as your having fun.

the new SL benz has the button on the shifter, best thing about it is the car senses the key in your pocket, so you just hop in, push the button and take off. I believe it's an option on the other models called "keyless go".

I recall a post about this earlier, only in that one the responses were constructive and not mocking the author.

Try this one showing the installation of a Z8 starter button. Here is another which is here on NAM. Good luck, sorry your post wasn't better received.
