RMW's new race inspired CAI

Having the need for a 3" inlet for our big Rotrex kit we decided to build something that hasn't been done. We have seen 20-40hp restrictions with cone filters on the big Rotrex's when pushed hard. Over 400hp:popcorn:

So having said that here is the first design...............

So...the last pic would be what you'd see if you're on the driver's seat & can see through the firewall?

dannyhavok Jun 30, 2011 08:28 AM

I believe that the last pic shows the view you would see standing on the drivers side of the open bonnet. You can see the cowl vents on the right hand side of the photo.

the last picture was taken from the LHD side

the box sits in the normal location

we will be offering one up with a 2.5" hose version later for the new superchargers we have coming and also the 3" version

I think I scrolled down & typed too fast as the last pic that popped up before I replied was the pic of the filter

So with the box mounted, the huge filter is angled downward?

yes, it allows a bigger filter for the space
there is also area after it to straighten out before going into the velocity stack

I don't imagine there is much restriction on a Stage I MINI S setup (15%, DDMWorks CAI, exhaust, tune). However, I'm sure that helps out your big MINI project a good bit. Nice design.

gothmdoc Jun 30, 2011 12:12 PM

interesting... any hint of when you will begin marketing this?

right, we are not worried about the units with the stock chargers........as Mini was smart enough to make an airbox worthy.......however on our TVS900 kits that will be coming out, you will need a better flowing box all the way up to 3" design, hence the start of building something that will work:thumbsup:

it's only currently for the 1st gen Mini's

we may however make something for the R56s

Now to make sure the heat is reflected away from the box to keep it as cool as possible:thumbsup:

Yes, the heat reflective material should definitely help out. Man, you've been watching NASA TV alot lately.

It looks too small...needs to be bigger

Seriously, that thing looks massive. Nice work.

actually it's not that big except the fact it's 3" outlet. We had one on the dyno running 1100hp Drag honda with the same design and the filter was about 2" longer and 1 in wider

tlr1000 Jun 30, 2011 04:46 PM

Does that panel air filter have more surface area than typical cone ones used on most R53 CAIs?

OldGameFreaK Jun 30, 2011 06:37 PM

Will a strut bar still fit with it?

Like! how much? loud?

DICKS GARAGE R53 Jun 30, 2011 11:02 PM

I actually had about the same idea cross my mind, when I wasn't sitting behind a desk in Iraq, I decided against building the thing though, because even with a 3 inch opening at the intake, my throttlebody is only 63mm, and with the length and smoothness of the intake tube, you could have a 5 inch pipe and not gain a single HP IMHO.

ggcadc Jun 30, 2011 11:31 PM

sure DG, thats the problem if your using the stock TB and everything after... but i think that problem may have been thought through already

I like the looks, wish I had the need for it...

Very nice Jan. Will there be an input for stock front air feed for stocker intake boxes?

Good news about the TVS900!

Jeremy
