Latest news on CAI's and panel filters for 2011+ S?
 

I've been going batty reading through the various intake threads, making decision after decision about the best route to go. Then ultimately get tripped up before committing to buy as many of the vendors don't specifically state the intake or filter will work with the 2011's.

Is there a consensus?

I'm fairly surprised there's not much news on the 2011's just yet.

Any help is appreciated

NM (specific product for 2011)
Alta (On my 2011 right now)

BSH looks like is only one known to be making a OCC for 2011. But there is debate in if a 2011 specific one is needed at all.

Yes there is a specific NM intake now avail for the 2011, also there is a specific turbo heatsheild for the 2011 from NM too. We've been testing and coming up with all sorts of 2011 parts a lot of them are same, but these are two we have avail now.

whats a perferred CAI for a track car?

Do the aftermarket panel filters from K&N, Alta, etc., still fit the airbox?

Mini Mania and NM Engineering sites will tell you if the part will fit 2011s specifically. Outmotoring will help if you call them with specific part and he'll do the inquiry. I just bought the Helix FMIC, and NM air charge tube, discharge tube, CAI, and heat shield from Outmotoring for my 2011 MCSa.

The factory stock air box fitted to all N14 and N18 engines, are exactly the same base on the air box, it's just the lids that differ between the engines and models!

So the panel filter for the N14 engined MCS, N14 engined JCW and the N18 engined MCS are the same dimensional size!

Yes, but it's the intake pipe that is different on US cars. Makes getting the NM intake about $200 cheaper.

Why do you want to run an open air filter ?

All your doing is subjecting your intake air, to the under bonnet temperatures! you will be better purchasing a performance flat panel filter for the stock factory air box.

Not entirely true. I am running the ALTA CAI and see about 6 degrees above ambient most of the time. And this is cruising around at about 30-50mph. On the Autobahn at 100+ I see 2-3 above ambient.

I'm not sold on the open filter. Which is why I started this thread. There was a general consensus on previous years that the panel filter was, indeed, the most efficient filter system with the best gains. Open filters may have increased torque or something, but overall performance suffered. I just wasn't sure if that still held true for the N18 motor.

I'm leaning towards a performance panel filter, just for cost/benefit ratio. I don't much care how it looks under the hood.

Just FYI, but you might want to take a look at this link. This is one of the reasons I ordered the NM CAI, and similarly the Helix FMIC. With boost tube and air charge tube, I should be able to get around 205 to 210 HP.

I have the DDMWorks Street CAI, which is an open intake. I see intake temps running around 5-6 above ambient on the highway. I also have a buddy running the JCW tuning kit, which has the closed JCW box, with a cone filter. His closed box also ran about 5-6 above ambient. Of course, running flat out both usually run about 15-20 above ambient or if you are really pushing it, it can get over 100. My DDM still uses the stock bottom of the intake box, which still uses the fresh air intake tube from the front of the car. I also have the fully open scoop opening insert. We ran all our data with ScanGauge IIs. To each his own, I suppose though. Good luck with your choice!
