Drivetrain ***OFFICIAL SIGN-UP THREAD for FLASH TOOL***
As huge an upgrade as the canned tune was that Jan sent out a couple months ago.... Having him fine tune my Mini on the dyno made it that much better. The hesitation appears to be gone along with any mid-throttle surging and so far, it appears my occasional superknock (puff of black) on the freeway's cleared up as well. All that and he pulled an extra 11hp and 10ftlbs out of his hat.
... and of course, Jan had emailed me a backup copy of the updated map before I got home.
Don't get me wrong, the canned tune vs. stock is amazing, driving without it feels like your R56's been lobotomized, but the extra little bit of tweaking Jan can do in person, is totally worth making a roadtrip to one of his tuning events. There's a lot of BS out there regarding tuning the R56, but you can be sure it's coming from the haters or the competition who simply can't do it themselves.

Jan, I was wondering if it is possible to do remote dyno tuning? Because a new dyno in my current city is opening in August. Also if this is possible what would the procedure be to get this accomplished?
Anyone else notice a significant drop in mileage on long distance trips? Every few months I have made trips of about 100 miles each way...used to achieve 37+ average every time, but since the tune, I averaged 30 MPG. This is without a heavy foot - when making this trip I am aiming for gas mileage, not fun.
Might just be a side effect of the canned tune?
Not really a big deal, as the fun of the tune more than outweighs the drop in mileage, but figured I would check.

LMAO over mpg. My mileage dropped too, mostly because my right foot gained 5lbs about .6sec after the tune. Even on long (+400mi) trips using the cruise control it's dropped. Did you know the difference between 75 and 85 is 6-7mpg! Maybe swapping the throttle return spring with one off of a Kenworth's valve trane might work for a little while. Self control is a cast iron b.....!

Like the guys have said, wind resistance grows exponentially with speed, so cruising a little bit faster can suck a lot more fuel. eg. 55-65, not much difference, 65-75, bigger difference, 75-85, huge difference.
I tend to drive 80-85 on average on the freeway when there's no traffic and my average was about 31 mpg pre-tune and 32 mpg post. Both are pretty imprecise 3 tank averages, but considering how much harder I'm driving the car now, I'm positive the tune has helped my mileage at least a little bit. Car is otherwise stock.
A Little Help - Downloading File onto My Genius
Hey there
I brought my car into see the Dr (Jan) to get a tune and when we put it on the Dyno he confirmed my suspicion that there was / is something wrong with my car -- I was 20 low on HP and torque for a stock JCW stage 1 car
Jan was also helpful in getting me connected with a knowledgeable tech at a dealer who has been helping me get to the bottom of all this
I'm trying to DL the file that is on my car onto the My Genius Flash Tool and seem to be getting hung up
I recorded a vid with my phone and posted it here on youtube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSuytSkUDNY
I know it's likely user error so pls forgive me if it's obvious
Any suggestion are appreciated - again I'm trying to DL the current file on the car onto my the My Genius Flash Tool
Thanks

I am doing this from memory so if anyone sees I am wrong please correct me.
When you first connect the flash tool, it will need to communicate and download the original file from your ecu. The step you selected "NO" is where the flash tool wants to download the original file to the flash tool. Until you do this download, the flash tool will not have a file on it. The only way you would have a MOD file on the flash tool is if Jan had already sent you one and you downloaded it to the flash tool. It does not change anything on the ecu when you do this download. Just copies the file to your flash tool.

That is what I recall also. The first time you use the tool there is no 'writing' option, only a reading option.
There is a reset option somewhere in the menu. I have not used it, but it implies that you can clear the memory on the tool and start again.
The fact that your tool says 'original' and 'modified' implies that it already has files on there. Perhaps you got a unit that was an RMA and was re-issued.
If you have performed a write on your car already trying yo figure things out, you may have overwritten your stock maps with whatever was on the tool.
I would start with the reset option.

Thanks Ladybug!
I know you can also check and delete files with the flash tool hooked up to your computer, if there are any tunes on it, by using the My Genius software.

Thanks for replies
I did not mention that I have already written and downloaded files before onto the mini
The unit was new out of the box
I guess that maybe where I cancel/abort the process when i reach the "write" option at the end at the end of video is where the tool wants to write TO the tool
Im pretty confident that the tool is empty and has no files on it ---- I confirmed this by using the desktop client (early in vid) and also by checking on unit
Any other comments are welcome and thanks again
Ladybug - I think u were in CT the same day I was

I'm pretty sure Jan removed mine w/ the latest dyno tune.
Jan, is remote dyno tuning possible with the tune? As in I take my Mini to a dyno then send you the info and you make changes based off that and then I can go back on the dyno to see the results or something like that. If this is not possible I will just wait for the pop and burble to come out and get the canned tune.
