Drivetrain RMW tuning day at Helix in Philly Mar/Apr '10
That is good news, makes me all giddy inside. I can't wait to show all the rednecks in my town whats up.
Where to start, where to start.
Had my 09 JCW dynoed and tuned today Wednesday 4-7-2010. Yeah whatever about the numbers on the dyno... I do not really care. I can't make heads or tails of these graphs anyways. I do care about what the car can do on the road and if it was worth spending the money on the tune and tool.
I left Helix and Philly around 1:45. I spent the next 5 hours driving up to Boston for work meetings on Thu and Fri. So I had a lot of "play time on the road." The car is much faster and seems to pull forever. Many of the shift points have been remapped. I was going 65 in 4th gear a few times after the stop and go traffic eased up. I also usually skip 5th and go straight to 6th. I found myself in 5th gear a lot at 65/70 MPH. I also found myself going 90 and above many times and even though I drive fast, I do not normally drive that fast. I average about 75MPH on my trips up to Boston. I drive up to the Boston area for work at least once a month. So I know the roads well.
The car just wants to keep going and going. Like an endless stream of POWER has been unlocked.
I have the Helix IC and the DoS intake on my car. I was pretty used to the sound of the turbo spooling up and blowing off. Jan changed something and now the pshhhh of the blow off is gone and replaced with a crazy flutter noise that kinda bugs me. Maybe I have to get used to it.
Jan perhaps you can chime in here and let me know one more time why that sound has changed.
This is just MY opinion. At this time, I am happy that I did this. Would I do it again... I do not know. Keep this in mind while reading this. There is only so much that can be done with a JCW. You guys with the Copper S cars. You are seeing more significant results.
In conclusion... Jan, it was great to meet you. You are a super nice guy for putting up with the endless stream of questions.
It was nice seeing Eric and Ralph of Helix again.
JP, great meeting you. Get your turbo and car back together and back out on the street.
Tim... You can try this again in CT in May. The disappointment is only temporary
Dave with the sweet, sweet Chili Red R53. Please don't drink any more meth. You freaked me out when you did that. And I hate to say it but your car was cleaner than mine. You have THE nicest R53.
Philly... peace until I come down that way again. Next time I need to get a real cheesesteak.

HERE HERE FOR REAL CHEESESTEAKS!!!! and that turbo's back in and working nicely! wont post any numbers yet cuz i don't have any yet :P and i have a slight leak in the oil feed line for the turbo. but on well, the tuning gremlins blessed me with a simple hose replace rather than an engine to replace so i'm happy!
i'll keep you up to date when we finally get that car on the dyno and fiddle. nice to know ya got up to boston in one piece too!

Don't be too disappointed by numbers on that dyno, from what i've heard it reads low by 10hp or so.... But numbers are only numbers anyways like you said, how the car drives is actually what matters.
That being said... I'm still curious to see the dyno sheet for some reason

if your spinning the turbo higher due to the tune you will need to vent air faster so the bov should be adjusted accordingly.
I will scan in the dyno sheet and post it when I get back home on Friday afternoon.
As for the BOV, I do not have a separate BOV on the car. Jan and Eric drove the car. Actually Eric is the one that pointed it out. I will PM them both to get an answer.

Ok the currect status of my car / tune.
I left the 95 + degree Dyno room around 7:15 PM lastnight and I still have a little mechanical problem. Vaccum leak somewhere?? UGH
I will track that down and correct the problem this weekend.
I did not make the power I expected and my boost was low at 13.9 / 14 with #'s like 195 & 192 Torque and 222 / 222 WHP. My last run was 201 tq / 227 Whp.
This was mostly due to heat soak (go figure) lower boost and in a Hot and humid as HELL Dyno room. I also had loose plugs that I put in.
*Note to anyone:* Double Tipple check your plugs before you get on the dyno to be tuned. ( Lesson learned
)
I did have my car tuned and no matter what anyone says Meth tastes great and does a body good.
I had to Phily getto siphon out my Boost Juice 50/50 mix and add 100 % pure VP meth for the car to be tuned correctly.
(Too much % water in the spray for the meth to make power over the wonderfull benefits of its cooling)
Special thanks to Jan & Eric for painfully working out the bugs with my car in the Dyno Oven. Just so people know it was a very unusally hot day yeaterday in Philly (90+ degrees out side in early April WTF!) It was even hotter in the Helix Dyno room with 4 roof exhaust fans running and 3 huge fans cooling the Meth filled room.
Extra thanks to Ralph who hooked me up with his crazy fast and VERY loud Evo to run out and pick up a gallon of Pure VP meth while my car was on the dyno.
I will post up my dyno sheets when I have time later today but they are really nothing to look at or frame. LOL and man did I miss that cool Rochester NY weather yesterday. More Dyno runs in the future and Jan will tune again in the future after I get a few things / issues corrected. The current tune has the car running cool and smooth with very decent power I just want rocketship power. LOL

Find that vacuum leak. I saw the weather on the news yesterday and wondered if you guys were dying in that dyno room. Get the thing fixed and come up and see us in Rochester if you can before the Dragon.
Crazy warm weather!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 85 here the other day- 50's today - 43 tomorrow
Let me know how it works out Dave.

I would love to come to Rochester NY again, do you guys have pick up and delivery service?
5 hours each way was a killer. Jan is going to maybe road tune it in the future or on his next stop at Helix.
You sure you'd want me driving yourcar for ten hours? Hope you get it fixed.
Check your emissions warranty on that tank. Well I guess you'd have to have a NICE dealer for help.
GOOD LUCK

Hell I dont even let them look at it when I go to get oil filters because they will want to bill me for just saying "nice car".
Come to think of it I should charge them for just looking at my car and when they say nice car I should reply with ; "Yeah I know, and now owe me $95.00 for looking at my car and my verbal reply to your comment. Oh and no cant touch it either."

How sexy would that V8TT mill be in an E30?
OUCH dude that hurt. Hahaha
I think I could run on 3 cyl and still pick up speeding tickets down South where they don't count against our license / insurance.
