Drivetrain RMW Tuning Feedback -How's your R56 MINI doing?
The boost comes on sooooooo smooth and strong, yet in a very progressive nature, and stays until the redline. With my old tune, I would barely dip into the throttle and it would instantly boost up to almost 18 psi, which might sound cool...but it sucked for driveability. Now the throttle is very linear, making the boost come on in the smooth nature that it does. 5th and 6th gear on the highway, is crazzzzzy. Put ur foot down, and you'll be doing verrrrrrry naughty speeds verrrrrrry quickly, and so smooth that you don't even realize it's happening. One of the biggest changes is power up top...don't know how he did it, but it's STRONG up there.
Jan,
Put the new map on and did a 400 mile trip and some skidpad and auto-x with the Tire Rack Street Survival org. General thoughts and feedback....
*Never had the hic-up that others have mentioned in the mid 3k range. Still not an issue....
*General Power and Torque difference? Can't really sense a big change. But there is more.
*Throttle seems to be a tad sharper. And it seems smoother?
*3500 to 7000rpm seems to be stronger - 5th and 6th have some really good pull.
*Temps - (per the scan gauge) are still in the 212-215 operating range.
*Boost - still seeing about the same. Saw 18-19psi once but wasn't paying a whole lot of attention to the gauges at the time while on course.
*Mileage seems about the same.
blah, blah, blah....yada, yada, yada......
You get the point......
Yeah, I'm diggin this tune....

Yes, you can buy one of his flash tools, and he'll send a tune along with it
As you know, I have had the pop and burble for over a year. With this tune, he took it off.
Jan knows exactly where the pop and burble is in the ECU and knows how to get it to do it....but he wants to get the actual tune completely ironed out before he starts sending out the pop and burble.
The P&B is such a trivial piece of the tune, it really should come last...the icing on the cake if you will. It's absolutely hilarious how many people constantly ask him, call him, email him, pm him asking about the pop and burble.

Updating and sending out tunes, is not a simple "Cut & Paste," then send out emails task...like people seem to think. He has around 150 people with tunes, so sending out mass updates is not an easy task. I will not answer for him though, as I do not know what his plan is regarding updates, but fear not he will take care of people.
No pop and burble...

By the way, I am looking at buy a the Invidia exhaust and you mentioned the drone. How would you compare it to stock. And I know this is somewhat of a loaded question, but I have to ask before I drop the $$
I personally love how it sounds, to me it's not an annoying drone....I like to know that the exhaust is there. Like I said, it was a lot worse with the old tune. I forget who it was, but I know someone on here thought the drone was completely unbearable and sold his Invidia. I wouldn't sell mine for anything.
My advice, buy it and see if you like it, which I think you will....if not then sell it, there will be plenty of guys that want it im sure.
Whoa !
Jan had sent me an updated tune to try out with the boost limiters fixed (removed?) a couple weeks ago. I was busy and haven't really felt like I needed any extra power in first or second... I prefer to hound Jan for some progress on the pop & burble
I was catching up on this (or one of the other RMW threads) and saw someones mention of the boost dump and the extra noise it makes combined w/ an unsatisfying acceleration. I've been getting that noise all the time since day 1 w/ Jan's tunes... so today I finally got off my butt and loaded up the new file...
Holy Crap ! I'm still not smoking tires, but I prefer to roll onto the throttle and have the factory lsd. Acceleration is much smoother w/o the boost dumping, but you definitely want both hands on the steering wheel when gassing it due to crazy torque steer.
I'll need to put some more miles on to get a better feel for the changes, but so far this latest update is pretty awesome ! I just hope Jan can get the pop & burble taken care of so we can all get a 'final' update and let him take a (brief) vacation

Drone is subjective, so I don't know if me answering will help.

I just had a deja vu experience. I had to drop my car off at the dealership to take care of some cosmoline dripping, and they gave me a loaner MCS clubbie with a slushbox (of course). No offense to anyone with an automatic, but I really hated the way it felt. It was like a binary switch for the throttle, either it was on and you would jerk forward, or it was off and you wouldn't go anywhere. Going into manual shift mode was better, but it still felt like I was disconnected from the whole driving experience. But it was handy in stop-and-go traffic (damn Bay Bridge).
So when I dropped off my car I pulled into a nearby parking lot and flashed the ECU back to stock. When I picked my car up I was running a little late so I decided to leave it stock. The first thing that popped in my head when I got on the expressway was, "OMG, what did they do to my car??? Why is it stumbling? Why does it sound so 'off'?" I pressed the sport button and it was a bit better but not by much. I could not believe that this is what a stock MCS felt like.
So I get home, finish my errands, and finally flash it back to "normal". I took it out for a spin and it was like a totally different car. Everything was so smooth when accelerating. When I punched the gas it immediately responded and I gleefully allowed it to press me against the seat. It was the exact same experience I felt when I first got Jan's tune. I fell in love with my car once again, and I just couldn't stop smiling as I just drove around aimlessly. If Jan's updated tune is even 10% better than this, I'm going to feel like a little kid at Chuck E. Cheese. Someone may call B.S. on this, but I actually don't mind waiting for Jan to put together what he feels is going to be a worthwhile update. It gives me time to enjoy the current tune, and it will make the updated tune even that more enjoyable.

To be fair, my hearing was damaged by too many IEDs in Iraq which caused issues with the pitch of the exhaust. I was the only one who had the problem with the exhaust. My wife even liked it. Unfortunately, it was too much for me. It has a nice deep tone and if I remember correctly it is its loudest around 3500 rpm.
That would be me

Since every car's a little different, I suspect Jan's following the "if it's not broke, don't fix it" rule and only pushing out updates when needed. If you're having some problems or missing something, you should contact him directly. The real gains and improvements are going to come from dyno tuning, the canned stuff isn't likely to change a whole lot.
Rmw tune
I was one of the first 60 individuals to get the tune and the car is still performin very well. I had already teh Thyfune CAI, the ALTA INTERCOOLER AND CAT-BACK EXHAUST.
That is the best thing I did on the car

yeah ive got no probs haha, just being greedy. i only got mine in June but have put on a Alta intercooler since then but Jan said it didn't need a new tune. i would like to get mine dyno tuned but since im in Australia it would cost more than the tune and tool did in the 1st place for only a few more HP.
the RMW tune and my engine torque arm bush were the best mods ive done. both totally transforming the car for the better.

Haha sorry, after being up for nearly 24 hrs, doing a 1 day Phx-LA trip, I was beeeat.
Anyway...I'll try to explain things to the best of my ability, and sorry if I ramble as things come to my head. The tune is amazing. The latest maps that Jan has the abilty to tweak, have brought a new level of smoothness that I just cannot get over. On my drive back to Phoenix, I could not stop smiling about it. It seriously feels like I got a different motor.
We did driveability stuff (street tuning) all day long, so we never actually did any dyno runs. And quite honestly at this point, I could really care less what the peak numbers are....the driveability and power curve are exactly what I want out of the car, and to top it off, there is no doubt that the car is running a lot stronger than it was...it just takes off and doesn't stop. Maybe I'll dyno it one of these days just for curiosity sake, but I really don't see the need.
With the tune that I have had for over a year now (with a slight re-tune in Nov of last year), the tune felt rather edgy/aggressive, and I had to tweak my driving style to be able to drive it smoothly. Did not bother me that much, as the newly added power felt great. Fast forward to the new tune from yesterday...I told Jan that tune feels like something that would come from the factory. There's just a new level of sophistication and smoothness, that was never there before.
The boost comes on sooooooo smooth and strong, yet in a very progressive nature, and stays until the redline. For a lot of the drive back I just set cruise control at 80, and relaxed. The exhaust and motor are a lot quieter at those speeds now. The Invidia has a slight drone to it, and with the old tune...your ears would be ringing after a 6hr drive to LA. The loud drone was a constant "raaaaarrrrr", and now it is a gentle "hummmm." So, even when cruising you can tell just how smooth and clean the motor is running. Oh and I avg 35mpg on the way home (keep in mind this was through the open desert and let's just say it included some "floorboard testing"
), so the gas mileage was quite impressive.
BIG thanks and
for Jan's hard work!
