Question about pullies and manufacturers...

Sorry, I'm sure this is a noob question, but I would like to get a 15% for my Mini. Are there some companies that are better than others? Or is a 15% pulley a 15% pulley no matter where it comes from? Any suggestions would be great.

THANKS in advance!

I thought you already did the pulley.

For owner of this thread: Just ask yourself which size is for you is this 11%? or 19% or something in the middle all others is what do you wanna get for your money.

Materials used, Mounting Solution, Features, Belt Retention.

I say Features only for things like "light weight" or "cooling vanes" etc.

Belt retention - how are the grooves cut, how is the edge of the pulley - if you were a belt, would you want to stay in place and retain excellent friction characteristics (not slip)

I went with M7 - it looked cool, they cared about the belt not falling off and it offered the blower speed I was looking for.

I didn't mention brand or price in my statement. Nor did I mention "you get what you pay for"

Are you ranting in general or replying to me?

Which one did you use and what happened so we know to stay away from it?

I have very expensive very high brand pulley and so many problems with it that........

Why? Because is probably done in china with a good brand on it...but you pay it good.

It's not always about the brand and money you pay. But people who don't have idea how it works (here is many self garage tuners) think they know...that's all.

Just my two cents.....

as the risk of being on topic, there is little difference between similar sized pullies, other than the way the pulley attaches to the supercharger shaft... i.e. something like the alta version 2.0 vs. the more common method (like helix). go with something from one of the reputable vendors here on nam and you should have no worries:thumbsup:.....other than what your next mod will be:grin:

Our local MINI guru likes the design of the Helix pullies, but has had some business-practice issues with the company and now goes with Craven instead. (Virtually identical design, and somewhat less expensive to boot.)

ALTA also seems to be popular....

Ive got the Alta V2 at the moment..and its not really good IMO...it eats up the belts in very quick time...

im gonna try the cool sounding Team Molecula pulley...

It sounds like your pulley isnt installed correctly. I don't think its pressed on all the way. Before purchasing another pulley maybe make sure the pulley is lined up with the other pulleys.

Nazrin,
which belt do you use?

One work shop in Germany has an issue with KMT ones, but after researching about the problem, we realise that the problem was belt and not the pulley. They have use Continental belt, before issue continental made them in Germany and after removing workshop to Romania, problems has started.
After discussion about that they start using Gates belt and now there isn't any problem about that any more.

Just to let you know and you won't spending the money if that isn't necesarry.

Im using the Gates K060535 for my 17% Alta....

....but the pulley was pressed on all the way...but i'll check again if I can

The Team Molecula Pulleys work very well with the Continental Belt made in Rumania. Why is that?
If there would be an issue about bad Belt quality of Continental a lot of standard cars would brake down, too because the belts are the same, just different lenghts. But that does not happen. Why?

It is just a matter of time that facts about Big Quality Problems of some Pulleys on the market will come into public. A lot brands will be included.

Just my 2 cents

Ive got an alta V1 its not given me any problems in 25k plus of driving.
Im still running the same belt from 55k and im now at 73k Dosent Even Slip.
Looks nice too. If your willing to look for it.

Thanks for the comments guys! I'm looking for a 15% or 16% pulley and I want to make sure I'm getting the right one. I don't care if it means spending a bit more. Quality is the most important. Will every pulley require a new belt as well??

Nazrin 09-18-2009 02:19 PM

Duck....you should try the TM pulley or KMT pulley...something different from the norm...

Yup!

Is that true even if you only have 6000 miles on your current belt?

MiniMacPR 09-21-2009 02:32 PM

I've had the Helix 15% for 30k miles and it has performed perfectly.

YUP!

mellanor 09-21-2009 02:40 PM

Thanks, Alta_John. Turns out it doesn't matter - can't use the 15% pulley on Clubman S it seems (please, please, correct me if I'm wrong).

M3NTAL 09-21-2009 03:19 PM

Your clubman s is turbocharged - no pulley involved. Check in at the 2nd generation forum as this is the 1st generation forum.

Well....If you can somehow fit a supercharger pulley on your turbo you're set! (honestly no you cant :( )
