Perhaps you misunderstood my question. I dont want the shifter itself, just the bushings. Since the cheaper sets on ebay are for 02-03 and I have an 04 I was curious if the bushings from those kits will fit the newer shifter. I would just ignore the new shifter itself.

Thanks, you saved me $50. Might have to make my own bushings.

Another thread revival. I have the B&M in BLU-BY-U, and this weekend doing some hot cone work for the Schomp Video shoot for the peoples fair, the shift linkage or something must have moved, as I can barely hold it in 2nd, 4th and 6th. Are there adjustments on the cable into the shift box? I did this 3 years ago so I dont remember. Anyone?

I just picked up a B&M kit for my 06 and was hoping to install it this weekend. If I get to it I'll let you know.

Here is a great write up I found that could help:

I'll reaffirm that the thread on the shifter (Fidanza brand on eBay) is indeed M12x1.25.

I just installed one on my 2003 Cooper and I'm liking it so far. A lot of the play is gone and it added some much needed resistance. Still not nearly as precise or notchy as my BMW, but it helps. Now I just need to replace this god-awful stock shift **** with something that actually fits the human hand. Too bad the standard ergo BMW **** won't fit correctly.

And I installed the solid bushing and didn't notice any additional vibrations.

I just bought a "Fidanza" brand on eBay for $35. There are a number of identical shifters on eBay (for early cars, 2002-2004?) sold under various brands or no brand. It was my understanding that these were all copies of the B&M shifter which is no longer made.

Non-B&M

Hello

I know this is an old thread, but I'm brand new here. We recently picked up an '04 Mini Cooper S John Cooper Works edition. It's a pretty cool little car. Run great and is fun to drive! There are a couple of things I've been trying to address on it, which is expected on a 13 year old car. One main one is the shifter. It seems to have excessive play, mainly side to side. When I pull the boot up and rock it side to side, it looks like the white bushing on the right side that goes into the linkage piece is moving out and around too much. My idea was to replace the shifter with a short throw model, hoping for the added benefit of taking up some of that slop since the shirt comes with new ball socket bushings. I can't find this B&M so I was looking at a couple different ones on eBay. They also come with some alloy bushings which I assume are base bushings? I haven't taken it apart to see how it all goes together. So couple of questions. Is this a common issue with these cars? Am I approaching the fix the right way, or should I be looking at something else which would cause the slop? Since I can't find a B&M, do these kits in the pictures look like they would do the job?

Any help, suggestions, directions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Just to bump this up for people who may be doing this swap. I did this on my 2003 Cooper S with a build date of 9/2002 and i found a B&M clone via amazon for about 39 dollars. It looked identical to the guy above me that posted the photos. It comes with two plastic caps; one on the bottom and the other on the side. You don't use the bottom cap (its obvious why) and you don't reuse the cap from the old plastic shifter - use the one provided.

I also come from the honda crowd (have two S2000's and work on them regularly) and used the high temp Urea grease that they use for their shifters and clutches and the shifter feels great. It'll never be a Honda s2000 shifter (connected via a metal shaft to the shift forks) as they're cables, but fresh replacement cables, the small rubber square and bushing that goes in between the shift weights on the transmission has brought the feel of the shifter to better than new! Just wish it was easier to access the shifter box!

I need one of those plastic retainers from the ebay piece. Was the one on the bottom the same size as the side one? Wonder if it would fit the stock side bushing? Mine broke. Can I buy it off yah?

Im trying to get rid of more side to side slop... if anyone has any tricks to do so please let me know! Its my biggest issue with the car now. I really wish I could tighten up the side to side play. Ive been rapid prototyping a new bushing but they dont hold up great.

ps i also had a s2000!

I think it was the same. I have a little baggie with the old parts, so let me look through it and if i've got it, i'll send it to you.

This is the bushings i was talking about.
https://www.detroittuned.com/mini-co...guide-bushing/

The one i had was worn, so there was maybe 3-4mm of play (but is amplified when it gets to the shifter). Getting that part took out 95% of the slop (side to side). And if you're cheap and dont want to pay for the part, you can just turn the square 90 degrees and it'll work much better. It's just annoying to get at with the transmission in the car, but you can do it.

And nice about the S2k, such a great analog car! Actually reminds me a lot of the R53. I'll never sell mine!
