Not bagging on the Dimsport tool at all, but it comes down to the tuner and the tools they have to tune the ECU. The Dimsport tool is a great key to unlock the door, but you really have to know what you are doing once there.

Thats why im waiting onAlta or RMW as they are Mini bases so its gotta work properly.
This is partially why things are taking longer than normal. The maps available in the Dimsport tool are not enough for a real tune in my opinion. There litterally hundereds of maps in an ECU and with the maps exposed with the Dimsport tools (about 5) its no wonder why some tuners are able to tune the ECU consistently. One boost map doens't cut it.

Alta also hasn't been able to produce anything that's really lived up to the hype yet, downpipes that throw CEL's, intakes that foul the MAF, inlet tubes that collapse, boost hoses & intercoolers that just don't fit...
Sure some of it's due to poor quality control, but a lot of it's just poor engineering and the only updates to their product line come in the form of price cuts and additional fine print/disclaimers.
Yup, we have done nothing ECU wise that lives up to the hype. But things will change and you will see why it took so long.

Regarding the other items, give me a break, you really have no idea. I am not going into the downpipe CEL issues, or the other things you mentioned. You can start a thread and we can answer them there. With all those things you have mentioned, we have hundereds of satisfied customers with those mentioend products and plenty of customers that we have taken care of if they got a part that was trimmed to bad or what not. I am done here. There was no need to toss that in there.

Just wanted to clear up your misconceptions on Dimsport....... I hear these complaints from other tuners who don't understand how the Dimsport really works
I fully understand how it works, i fully understand there are many maps in the Eprom, but unless you have spent a year doing nothing but decoding it, i know that you are not able to tune all the maps. I am not saying you dont know how to tune cars at all, but i do know that you battle with consistent boost(in all gears), and being able to make the same power on both old and new R56's. The new R56's don't get as much boost or power. We found this with the Unichip long ago. This has to do with the ECU mapping for the Wastegate Duty cycle maps. Because some of the tunes on the new cars are lower than the old i know that you are not exploring too far past the basic maps they unlock. But that is not a cut on you at all, Its just an observation.

Overall being able to tune fuel (which you can), tune full throttle timing (which can), being able to adjust the boost target map for some gears( which you can) you can make a very fun car, and great seat of pants difference.

Looking at what people are saying about your tunes, if these customers didn't have a boost gauge, and got thier car after you tuned it, i too would super stoked! The increase we can get from the Dimsport tool are very good, but still leave alot to be desired.

Don't think that i am trying to say you can't tune a car, because in the Mini world you have more time tuning Minis that anyone, including us.

I'd love to be able to recommend a local manufacturer.
Fine, the intake, while YOU think that there were all these issues, we have only had 4 ever, out of hundereds, that failed at the spot weld. Guess what, we replaced them. If you are refering to the back of the box where we changed it, we did this to make installation easier. Our original designed worked great on our car as well and many many others. We found that something changed, the motors on some cars moved more and some hit the sound generator, so we fixed it with a plug to ditch the sound generator. Then moved to changing the box to clear the sound generator altogether. What is wrong with that?? Is this not making something better to work on more peoples cars?? The silicone hoses was a nightmare for us as we made it, it worked, then got trimmed incorrectly and really fouled up that the hoses fit. This has also been corrected. I am not going into the downpipe issue, as this will be addressed in an other thread. I am done with answering to your constant pokes, and over exaggerated opinions about how we do business.

Umm, we are answering customer questions proposed on this thread, we didn't start it. Your right we are talking about something that doesn't exist. But we have to keep people interested in what we are doing. If we mentioned nothing ever until it was ready, that looses customers that other wise may have waited for our part. Also not mentioning anything, gives customers that we are doing nothing about it, and also gives customers the idea we are doing nothing new in the Mini world.

We have this fine balance of letting customers know something is coming, but doing it just early enough that when customers are getting restless, BAM we come out with it. But on this product, its taken so long that it didn't really work out the way we wanted.

What i can say is that when our product is out, it will be what customers want and it will be what tuners wants. We do feel this will bring a whole new level of tuning, and tuners to the Mini world. Because the "tuning" aspect of these cars have pretty much compared to other cars, out there, we feel this aspect is really untapped. The Euro tuning world is full of all these secrets about how a car is tuned, and how the ECU's work, and all that. But we are going to change the way people think of ECU tuning.

Has there been any results/testing yet as to what sort of torque and HP we might expect from this tune? Throw us a bone!

Very good write up Jeff. By going through the code is the way to do it, not just finding maps visually by 2D and 3D patterns using an emulator. By going through code you can see when each boost map is being used by what condition flags it sets in RAM to use that particular boost map. Using the emulator is good way to test what you have found going through the code more quickly. Very good work Jeff and I am sure you guys product will change the way of Euro ECU tuning.

I'm sure Jan could tune it and get some more power out of it - just not as big a jump as with a turbo car.

Well they say no new is good news, right??
NOT in this case, which is a bummer. We do not have any new news at the moment. I really wish i could say more, but there is progression for sure.

To recap, we have tuned cars, but the basic mapping just doesn't cut it. Which is part of why its taking so long. As we have said before, WHEN its out, it will be the ECU tool to have!

Jeff, I only live a few miles from you guys so if you are interested in final testing of your ECU on my JCW (other than your shop car) let me know.

Cheers
