Just wanted everyone to know that over the last couple days, I have been fighting a wicked virus - fever and all. It winded me getting to the computer!

I will be returning phone calls on Monday - sorry about the lack of response, one of the drawbacks to running the show solo.

Thanks for your patience!

Randy

Randy,

No hurry on the replies. Take care of yourself. I'm just recovering from a bout of strep throat. So I can relate!

Randy-
Sorry to hear about your virus encounter.
I've placed lots of recent calls to you but got no response which is unusual. This means something is up and it is always helpful when you let us know-even a really short note. Now we can be calm.

Get your rest and fight off the viral demons.

The fall is a favorite time for colds- careful when you travel- airplanes are viral incubators that fly. Yuk.
At home everyone is very ill and been sick for going on three weeks. I put on my superMINIman cape took mega vitamin C and E and got more rest in an effort to side step the bad guys. So far so good. My kids are wondering- why don't you get sick?- they are so miserable. Lucky I guess, I drive a MINI!

Take care of yourself. Take your time getting well. Better to be fully well than under the weather for longer.

Looking forward to talking to you soon.

Maybe it was because of the " LOTS of recent calls" that he didn't get back to you!

Get well soon, Randy.

When I have cold or flu, I'd like to have big bottles of gatorade handy, as they are more palatable than water. Better hydration tends to keep your flu symptoms easier. Just so you know, going to the ER and getting antibiotic does nothing for VIRAL diseases. I have taken care of many poor souls in the Cleveland Clinic ER who thought otherwise. Only for strep-throat, you'll need a shot of penicillin in your butt cheek.

Like someone mentioned, mega-dose of vitamin C and Zinc have also shown to ease the severity of flu symptoms and cuts the duration to some extent. Cold-eeze is one of the Zinc logenze products I like. Nasal Zinc gels, such as Zicam, works equally well, but I don't like shoving stuff up my nose personally.

If you want to know more about cold/flu symptoms and treatment, I can go on and on...

By the way, is your e-mail working now? Can I send my order to you via e-mail later?

Good luck.

Dr. Kazu.

Although zinc works very well, it works best before the virus really takes hold in your body. So zinc is great at the FIRST symptom that something might be up. You need to block the virus before there are a million of them in your body!

Whenever I tell people who are sick or get sick often to take more or a lot of vitamin C they almost always say, "Oh I am". Then when I ask further they admit to taking several tablets of a couple hundred milligrams daily. No, no, no. For it to have a significant effect, you need to take vitamin C to your bowel tolerance. In other words, if you're sick or getting sick, try taking 2,000mg every hour. I you don't get diarrhea or excessive gas, try taking 2500mg/hour. And so on. Once you get gastric symptoms that are INDEPENDENT of the virus, backoff on the vitamin C to the level that didn't cause the problems. So if 3000mg/hour caused distress, take 2,000mg or 2500mg an hour. Continue to take this high level of vitamin C for a day or two after you feel better. In many cases you can knock a bad virus or flu out and relieve yourself of the symptoms in a matter of hours.

Feel better Randy.

Me, too! Especially coming from Randy...

before I read the threads, I thought it was one of those his excellent write-up on the "Sickest" and "Baddest" mods. Ha ha...

Randy, Humor can be very good medicine when you are down! I liked "Best in Show" and "Old School" in recent movies I have seen.

Hope you feel better soon,

Kazu.

================================================== =======

Just wanted to beat the dead horse with my science stick, since randy always impresses me with his well-controlled dyno studies.

Here's some data on Zinc supplementation on cold symptoms, study from Dr. Mossad that I worked together in the past (Mossad Q J Med 2002;96:35-43).

----------------------------------------------------------------
Controlled trial on Zinc Gluconate nasal gel treatment

Subjects: 80 healthy adults with natural colds presenting within 1-2 d

Treatment: Zinc gluconate nasal spray QID [2.1 mg] vs placebo x10d

Results: Reduction in duration of illness (4.3 days vs 6 days in whole group, 3 days vs 6 days in those with positive RV PCR).

Nasal drainage, congestion, hoarseness & sore throat were affected, starting from day 2.
Side effect: nasal burning was similar in both groups.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Time to cold resolution and duration of individual symptoms*
Zinc (n = 40) Placebo (n=38) P value †
Days to resolution of cold 4.3 (2.5-5.5) 6 (5-8.5) 0.002
Days to resolution of all but one cold symptom 4.0 (2.5-5.5) 5.3 (4-8) 0.006
Cough 1.8 (0-5.5) 3.3 (0.5-6) 0.14
Hoarseness 1 (0-3) 3 (0.5-5.5) 0.02
Scratchy throat 1.5 (0.25-3.75) 3.5 (1.5-4) 0.06
Sore throat 1.5 (0-2.5) 3.3 (1-4) 0.05

Nasal drainage 4 (2.25-5) 5 (4-7.5) 0.003
Nasal congestion 4 (2.25-5.5) 5.5 (3.5-7.5) 0.01
Sneezing 1.5 (0.5-3.5) 2.5 (1-5) 0.08
Headache 1 (0-2.25) 1.5 (0-4) 0.47
Muscle aches 0.25 (0-1.75) 0.3 (0-2.5) 0.81
Fever ‡ 0 (0-1) 0 (0-1.5) 0.75
* Results are reported as median number of days (interquartile range)
† Wilcoxon Rank Sum test (two-tailed)
‡ Oral temperature > 98.60F
================================================== ======

Okay, are you still awake? In a nut shell, zinc works, but you are still better off not getting flu/cold in the first place.
