What would you do?
i recently came across a brand new set of R56 brakes. FOR FREE! calipers, slides, brackets, rotors, pads, everything. I own an R53 however. now i know that R56 brakes are the R53 JCW brakes but im not sure i really want them. I have never really had issue with stopping. I think the Mini stops very well for the brakes it has. So. Should i put the R56 brakes on? or should i try and sell them? i could use the money for other mods that i want ( rear sway bar, JCW injectors, JCW suspension ) .
what would you do? keep the brakes and put them on or try and sell them? either way i figure its a free mod. Gotta love that  |
Sell the brakes and buy other parts that you want.
|
Wow, how cool is that !
But, unless you plan on auto-X your mini, as you stated the stock R53 brake set up works fine. Afterall, these cars weigh in under 3k lbs. IMO, I would sell them and use the $ for a upgrade or new equipment and the rear sway bar would be at the bottom of my list too..... Injectors work best in concert with other modifications incl. larger throttle body, and headers and CAI. But again, these injectors would be at very bottom of my list absent those mods and a tune. Stock injectors for the most part are very good and functional beyond most modding you may want to do for street applications anyways. Good Luck! |
You hook up a fellow NAMer like me. Sell it to me cheap. My brakes pads and rotors are worn, so this could benefit me.
|
I think you should put 'em in a box and send them to me:grin:. I'll pay for shipping. Or, I'll sell them for you and split the money.
Just foolin. What condition are your stock brakes? Could use the money for that brake job your garanteed to need, for your mods. |
Put them on and then get a swaybar.
|
Clean them
put them in a box, and wait. When you've done more to your car and you start having brake system capacity issues, then you'll have your fix just for the time of doing the swap!

So who was giving them out for free to start with?
|
Nobody, I was hoping he would sell it to me cheap. There's a set right now on the NAM Market for 250$ but it's out of my budget.
|
I got them for free. i work at a BMW/mini dealership and a NEW R56 wanted JCW brakes retrofitted. The customer bought the JCW brakes before the car ever was driven. He didnt want the old R56 brakes so i took them. Its only money i guess
for me however, this was a substancial "come-up" on some new parts. The problem with selling them is that i would have to find someone interested kinda locally or be willing to come get them. As much as i love everyone here on NAM i am a little weary about shipping valuable things to strangers on a hope and a prayer on a good return. I have that childish attitude of gimme gimme now now now. So putting them in a box and waiting till i need them someday is a great idea, but kinda sucks because i want as much as i can get as soon as i can get it. ( typical american attitude ). so i'm guessign the general concensus is try and sell them rather than slap them on now? |
I can pay first? Isn't that what most people do? That's what I've been doing on most transactions on this board... how much would you sell them for? just curious...
|
ur likely to run across another set in the future since you work at MINI right? If you have other things you would like to have first, sell them. I am a bit biased, because i'd like to buy them from you. I love driving to Cincy, so I could solve your shipping woes. you work at my favorite dealership too btw. Always a good reason to eat at cheesecake factory too, lol.

try refressing, you have a PM there buddy :-)
|
damn that was fast...
|
so wait the R56 brakes will fit an R53? what about the JCW for the R56 will they also fit on an R53???
|
No.
|
so the JCW R56 brakes will not fit but the stock ones will? or the R56 brakes will not fit a R53?? if the R56 brakes DO fit the R53 then why wont the R56 JCW brakes fit as well?
|
regular R56 brakes ARE the R53 JCW brakes without the paint.
R56 JCW brakes are larger than stock R56 brakes so they will not fit an R53. |

i have no idea. i assume the caliper is much larger. I know the rotors are bigger and thicker. the brackets realisically should bolt up but youd need atleast a 18 inch wheel to fit it im guessing. and with a 18" wheel you wont be going fast enough to use the R56 JCW brakes.

Put them on, it's no brainer!
I recently upgraded my R53 brakes (Hawks HPS pads) to stock R56 brakes with stainless lines, the difference is phenomenal. Stopping power is beyond my expectation and tire capability, very linear and easy to modulate.
|
Has anyone just added ss lines to the stock R50/53 brake system? It's got to yield better results. I put 'em on all my bikes.
|
SS lines change feel
but don't change the thermal capacity of the brake system, so don't do anything about fade.
But I'm sure many have do the change to get a bit more firm of a pedal.... Matt |
