A little something for those turbo only guys and girls....

Just came across the little bit of kit below and thought you might like to see....

http://www.sound-performance.com/p19...duct_info.html

Basically its a way of reducing lag/spool times. when used with a twin scroll turbo (housings are avaliavle for most Garrett turbos) it forces all the exhaust gas through half the housing. This effectively makes the turbo opperate with 50% of its normal A/R. as we all know small A/R ratios give very fast spool up but will casue the turbo to 'choke' the engien at higher RPMs. with the above bit of kit the other side of the housing opens once the desired boost level is reached and allows the engine and turbo to breath to the full potential!

the net result is much faster spool up with no loss in power!

so what do you guys think?? could it work?? i have heard of people using wastegates instead of the vavles and they seemto recon it works great. only problems are surge (shouldn't be an issue on smaller engines).

by the way i am not linked in any ways to the above company, just think tis a grat product and wated to talk about it.

Cheers

Chris.

I can't get the link to work but why not just ude a wastegate and a good BOV?

this item is designed to reduce spool up times considerably! basically you are forcing all the exhaust gas through one side of the housing. the cause the trubo to boost much faster than normal. once boost is reached then the other housing is 'opened' up to provent the turbo from choking the engine.

you still need a wastegate for ultimate boost control, but this will get you to peak boost faster!

Chris.

PS. link fixed

It looks like it would aid in building up boost the same way smaller tubing would aid, however....
I see some inherent flaws in this design....one, no matter how much you block off, you still have a larger housing and turbine to spin. That doesn't change and a higher pressure but larger housing wont make as huge an impact as the smaller housing. Two, that really impedes flow patterns when closed, which will cause higher EGT's and heat on the manifold itself as well as heat on that valve. How much heat can that take? We are talking in excess of 1300 degrees.

It would need to be tested to see if it makes a difference. They only come as small as a t3 housing, and I think I am the only idiot running that housing size......plus you need a split t3 housing on the turbo, which I dont run....

Thanks for the responce TrickleX.

its not going to answer all the question people have, and its not going to brake the laws of physics, but it might make things a little better!

anyway, guys have tried similar ideas but using wastegates to control the flow. they work pretty well and of course can take the temps. however they are much more bulky designs than this setup.....

i believe some of the sequentical turbo setups use similar valves to direct flow into the smaller or larger turbos. it is a valid point though. i will speak to the company ansd see what they say.

The point about the larger housing and turbine i dont understand. this devise when used on a Twinscroll housing effectively gives you a smaller hosuing...only once you reach yuor desired boost level it becomes the less restrictive larger housing. why is that a bad thing?

once agian im just trying to get your guys opinions/thoughts/ideas. everyone wants to have the cake and eat it.

Cheers

Chris.

PS. it looks pretty simple to make, is there any reason a smaller housing veriant couldn'tt be made??.

You need a twin scroll exhaust housing for this to work.

Does Garret even make a T3 or T4 twin scroll housing?

yes you do. and yes garrett do do a T3 and T4 twin scroll turbos so i would guess you could get the housings...
