Oil cooler... why isn't anyone using one?
 

With all the "hard" driving members here, I've never heard the mention of anyone using an oil cooler. I'm seriously considering the Moss system as theirs also converts the filter to the more common spin-on type. Anyone else have thoughts on this?

I don't get it...the lack of interest :roll: Back when I had a turboed CRX, that mod was the first thing that followed, including a spigot for the oil drain. Oil change was a breeze :roll:

Doesn't the MCS come factory equipped with an oil cooler? Seems like that's the smaller "radiator" looking thing behind the lower front grille of the MCS... mounted directly in front of the actual coolant radiator.

The spin-off filter adapter sounds like a good thing!

My guess is that no one's hooked-up a tempurature guage yet (aside from a few racers) to see what's really going on in there ...

I'd put a cooler on all my old Mini's and Spridgets too but the fact that No one (aside from Moss) has offered them make me think that for a street car, it's not needed - maybe the design is good enough that for normal driving, the oil temp stays in range.
It's an easy enough thing to plumb in, so if tempurature Were a problem, i think every aftermarket firm would offer it.

Exactly. Not only is the spin-on very practical, but any added cooling will only benifit the oil life. MCS appears to have a mounting spot in front of and attop of the radiator too. Whats up with that :razz:

The mounting "in front of and attop" the radiator is where Moss mounts their kit - it also is where the factory puts the cooler for the CVT transmission, which is why the tapped holes and stuff are there already.

synthetic oils like to run a little hot to burn off the funk.

there is a tiny water cooled oil cooler on the S, but it is mounted directly on the oil filter housing and fed with system coolant.

I see from your sig picture that you have an"S". I believe the Moss oil cooler conversion is Cooper only. I, like you, thought it seemed like a good idea. However, when I looked into it, I found no S kit. It's been a while since I asked. May be new developments.

I found the oil cooler/conversion kit about 8 months ago in one of MOSS's catalogs and thought it was a brilliant idea. Perhaps it's lack of interest is because on they claim it's application is for "02-03 Cooper Only". I have an 'S', so I kinda passed over it, and have been checking back frequently to see if they've had any updates.

To counter BeerBrewer's comment. The smaller "radiator" mounted low and in front of the actual cooling radiator on the S is the AC condenser. I now for a fact because I had to have it checked out after a "slight" run in with an empty 5-gal paint bucket at highway cruising speed. It creased my lower valence and put a decent sized dent in the condenser. It will cost about 3 bills to replace it but it's not leaking and the AC is still cold. The better news is that that bottom black plastic is modular and relatively easy to replace and only costs about $50. Good news for everyone that has been scraping on driveways and speed bumps since they bought their cars.

M7 will have a new oil cooler system, it will be a direct replacement unit cooled the same way as the stock unit
just more efficiently. This unit is fantastic it's used on many WRC cars and comes in 3 sizes I will have the units available within a couple of weeks, randy will have a unit for test shortly (for you who want's to know).
I will let everyone know ASAP what the price is going to be.

Now that sounds great!
If it replaces the stock and is cooled in teh same way, I assume that it is an oil to water cooler? Any heads up on the price?

you had a turbod crx?
i had one two..jdm motor, turbo, OG blitz rims ran 12.7 at lacr :smile:

When did you have yours? I built mine back when there were no such thing as "ricers" in 86 :grin: :grin: It was cool to the only one back then....easy to spot :lol:

Peter, any updates?

Not being an "oil expert", I would think jlm hit the nail on the head. The synthetics that are run now aren't as susceptible to heating as the old fossil fuel stuff was. Unless you're towing something or running high speeds in very hot temps for extended periods, I don't think it'd be a problem.

I have a moss cooler with spin-on filter and a gauge and the temp. stays at 210 most of the time,play hard and it rises some but recovers quickly

What were your readings like before installing the Moss cooler?

I do not know,I installed the oil pressure and temp. gauges and cooler at the same time.I always put extra gauges and coolers on all my hot-rods.
