Alta Catch Can

OK guys and gals, I just installed the OCC on my buddies car, and looked at the price tag for it. Are you kidding me! A red foam beer coozy and some alum. ends and fittings with red hose. OMG. I'm in the wrong buss. here. What is with the cost markup on this. I understand the full purpose on this product but, does it come with the reach around after they get the credit card number from you. I'm sorry but, I just had to vent some of this off.

Unfortunately this is true for just about every MINI-specific mod out there. Very little competition and a very small market.

Kinda sux..........

Although you can find decent generic substutes for some parts. I got my OCC off of eBay for $30.

Yea, but you have to love the beer photo..

I too have sounded off about this product before.

You haven't even found two of the major problems with it yet: it can collapse under mild vacuum in use, and will eventually degrade and stain from the motor oil, for which silicone is not rated.

The $15 OCC works better...

It came with the Alum. sleeve that lined the foam to form the canister. So that section will not fail. I do see the oil being a problem due the fact that it's 100% sealed. You just slide the sleeve in and then put the two end caps on and tighten the rings down. Not an effective product for the price. It should screw together. This would make it better. I could see that price with the machine work involved but, it still shouldn't be anywhere near the current price.

if creative, you can come up w/ something on the cheap. I experimented w/ PVC and it worked fine but the PVC did not like the heat and the fittings would get loose. Just taking a piece of exhaust pipe, sealing top and bottom and adding fittings will work nicely.

Well, I did find this after doing some snooping. Wow, this is really nice product compared to what I had to put together from ALTA. I'll keep digging around and keep posting my findings. Not to take anything from ALTA, but this construction looks very nice.

After reading the design aspects of this one. I have the full understanding on how this can should fucntion. On the inlet side of the can you need the tube to run about 1/3 of the way into the can so your not sucking the air right back out long with the dirty vapor. Here is the right up. http://www.mckinneyraceworks.com/cat...products_id=80

your just paying for those little white letters....

You really need to do a search on ebay for oil catch can. You will literally come up with hundreds of results.

heronm249 06-17-2008 06:11 PM

Just finished building one from parts I picked up at Lowes.

Just going to change out the filter element for something that is designed to catch oil alittle better. I had the IC off and cleaned it with brake cleaner. Holy Crap and the brown crap pouring out the end. :eek2: Well, I should a difference in the car after that gets reinstalled.

Self-built Oil Catch Can: $36.00
professional install by me: Priceless  :impatient:

No pics.........

Nice install. Just remember to hook it up to the grey line and not to the intake tube.

One other tip on removing the IC, if you remove one of the bolts from the 2 front brackets and loosen the other one and swing the bracket out of the way the IC goes on and off a lot easier.

JCW Driver 06-18-2008 05:04 PM

That looks an awful lot like OldRick's install. (...although it's been a couple years since I saw it up close so I'm going from memory.) :)

ScottinBend 06-18-2008 05:29 PM

Yep........

Bahamabart 06-19-2008 07:06 AM

It appears that you did the two sided hook-up, if correct you would be better served to do a single sided hook-up or run two cans.
