Turbo Boost Creep!
 

Is this an issue on R56 Turbo Mini's?

Seeing as quite a few people are running increased boost and TBE's it seems logical to assume that boost creep can affect our R56's aswell?

Well I have added a TBE and a turbo heat shield to my R56 and have not expierenced this....I went from pushing 9-11 lbs of boost to no between 12-16....after reading your link it talks about pushing 17.5 and up for 2-3 seconds...have never seen anything like that, nor does my boost "hold for 2-3 seconds"....I suppose it could be possible, but have not encountered this...I stand behing my TBE from www.waymotorworks.com and I stand behind Way himself, great product with no sign of boost creep!

Boost creep would actually be beneficial on such a small turbo like the R56 has :lol:

However, I have definitely never seen this creep.

I wouldn't imagine it would be an issue on this engine. Perhaps someone who has been doing the tuning software could chime-in to comment...

It would be possible for the turbo shaft to snap if the boost was to high, best case the exhaust impeller disappears out the back of the car ; worst case debris gets in to the intake and eventually in to a cylinder.....
There are two types of wastegates. The first one is an internal wastegate (right). An internal wastegate is a component on the turbo unit itself. The gate is opened via an actuator which is a diaphragm type system (see left picture). Excess exhaust is then fed directly into the exhaust system. We also have what is called an external wastegate (left), unlike an internal wastegate, it is separate from the turbo unit and does not require an actuator. Excess exhaust can either be fed into the exhaust system or it can be vented straight out and into the atmosphere. High performance set-ups typically follow the latter alternative. Most stock systems come with an internal wastegate as this set-up is better suited for low boost applicationsHowever most aftermarket systems perform better with an separate external wastegate assembly making it an ideal choice for those generating boost in the range of 20-30 PSI.

I know for a fact the Alta PnP ECU hits 20PSI on overboost, as does my ECU remap, so this Boost Creep could be an issue to people with mapped ECUs....

the 20psi target is referring to the VF39 on the EJ257, not the MINI's engine.

Fair enough, but who knows what the limit on the stock R56 turbo's Wastegate is?
On a heavily modded R56 with a TBE that was pushing 20PSI at full throttle, who knows if the stock wastegate could divert enough air to the exhaust or is it at its limit? and could boost creep be occuring?

The R56 turbo might have a really big wastegate that can easily handle 20PSI (and cut it off there to prevent any boost creep) but then again it might not have, and also is boost creep damaging the stock turbo or can it handle a few PSI over 20?
