I have a few questions for you guys and gals out there. Now i believe the srt-4 starts at 215 hp and its 0-60 time is about 5.7 depending on what magazine you read. Now if you get the MCS to 200 hp (with Works) the est time is 6.5.
(which is inaccurate because BMW said the MCS stock was 6.9 and the lowest time from any mag was 7.1 I think.) So Really its probably at 6.7 with 200 hp.
Shouldn't it be quicker than that? This time is with heavy wheel/runflats right?

And if you get your MCS to the 200 hp ballpark by modding yourself and more torque and have lighter tire/wheel package it should be better also.

Basically my point is why isn't the MCS quicker? Its lighter than most cars. If its possible to get this much hp out of it, then we should be able to see lower times, maybe 5.9?

Hey look i know if i wanted a faster car i could have bought the Neon or a Mustang even. I bought the Mini because i like smaller cars (had a CRX that i loved) I wanted a great handling car and a car that was pretty quick. When i saw the Cooper I simply fell in love. Like many of you did. I just hate the fact that a stupid ugly Neon will blow the doors off me right out of the factory. Am I the only one?

OBTW a co-worker of mine is getting one in the coming weeks :???:

the MINI's tall first and second gear aren't really set-up for 0-60.

That's my guess.

ames330 Jun 27, 2003 09:12 PM

My friend has a 1989 black turbo Dodge Caravan that he just converted to manual transmission! It's ridiculously fast! He's got something like 300hp and a sewer pipe for an exhaust! This thing is LOUD! I don't know about his 0-60 but the record for the fastest 1/4mi for a turbo minivan is an unbelievable 12!

Anyway....he's planning on getting vanity plates: SRT BUS

to poke fun at the new SRT-4...and also to refer to his minivan as a "short bus".

He just OWNED two Honda VTEC Preludes the other night. Both drivers looked over and said "what the ******?!?!"

Getting to my point...He too has a MINI and does not appreciate the SRT-4. So, it's back to mods, mods, mods!

nfo Jun 27, 2003 09:18 PM

ames that is too classic!
i wish i could see the look on those guys faces!

I raced the othe day a sr4t and it blew my cooper s I have the pulley and the pilo intake but is no contest, the car I raced is from a guy at work, you can not compete, better said impossible to compete when they(mopar) has a stage 1 that will give them 240hp and 260ft toke at the flywheel, this stage cost $399, I love my car but the reality is that when it comes to been fast any car be faster especially when even saturn will have >220hp,for less than 20000, one may criticise a will remark if you want a srx or evolution buy but when you compare apples to apples in reality our apple is underpower to them, any thoughs

Ryephile Jun 27, 2003 10:28 PM

that's ok, I'll let the SRT-4 run ahead of me to filter out any kind police officers handing out speeding tickets

I didn't buy my MINI to drag race, I bought it 'cuz it handles amazing and has excellent build quality.

Cheers,
Ryan
[edit], btw, there aren't any cars I HATE, however I do disapprove of some of the more poorly designed sheets of molded plastic out there (coughasstekcough)

So how much torque would it take for the MINI to reach 0-60 in 5.5 seconds?

dominicminicoopers Jun 27, 2003 10:49 PM

>>Basically my point is why isn't the MCS quicker? Its lighter than most cars. If its possible to get this much hp out of it, then we should be able to see lower times, maybe 5.9?

I think it comes down to rolling resistance. I have a base model Dodge Neon and the MCS. It is much harder to move the MCS when in neutral on level ground (e.g. my garage) than it is to move the Neon. Takes my full foot on the floor to get the MCS rolling and then it doesn't roll that well. Now the Neon. Take my big toe and push and it rolls almost effortlessly. I only wish my MCS rolled that easily...

I got to go for a ride in a Volvo 240 with a Mustang 5.0 conversion.

What a flippin riot. A buddy of mine had the conversion done and brought it to work and we took it for a brief spin up P'tree in Atlanta. Big fat smoky burnouts in a Volvo!!

I still laugh my @ss off thinking about it.

There is more to life than drag racing... Either you love the MINI for what it is, or, you don't. If you do, then you won't care about the SRT-4 being faster

Both cars are excellent performers, but ultimately, they have different target audiences. If the SRT-4 really bothers you, then I think you should trade the MINI in for one... trying to compete with the SRT-4 at the same cost level is a losing battle and an unjustice to the MINI.

The MINI vs. SRT-4 is nothing new... Boxster owners are looking at the Honda S2000 and Nissan 350Z in the same way and BMW M3 owners many times look a the Corvette Z06 in the same way. You really have to look at the whole package when comparing cars, not one feature at a time (like comparing 0-60 times).

Finally, maybe this will help put things in perspective... I was going to buy a Z06 but decided to get the MINI Cooper S instead. I couldn't be happier with that decision  Overall, the MINI is much funner.

Calvin77 Jun 27, 2003 11:01 PM

IMHO, speed is secondary when your car is crude, ugly and cheap looking.
A quick 0-60 time won't make the Neon any less hideous.

No disrespect to SRT owners, the fault lies with Chrysler, not them.
Just callin' it how I see it..

dominicminicoopers Jun 27, 2003 11:02 PM

If we take them in the twisties but they eat us alive in the straights, what good is being 5 MPH faster thru a corner if they're 50 MPH faster on the straightaway?

*playing devil's advocate*

Greatbear Jun 27, 2003 11:13 PM

The MCS needs the first few gears lowered a bit. second gear all the way to 60mph? I sometimes accelerate onto the road in a hurry then cruise... 1, 2, 6.

It'd be a rocket then, even with 163 hp.

rfibanez Jun 27, 2003 11:16 PM

Thats true...my friends with their hondas and suburu's say that being able to take corners doesnt really matter. Thats until I race them and pass them in every corner, but they eventually catch up in the straigh aways.

dominicminicoopers Jun 27, 2003 11:19 PM

>>The MCS needs the first few gears lowered a bit. second gear all the way to 60mph?

I agree with you on the gearing on the 6-speed MCS tranny. However to put things in perspective my Neon can go to 35 in 1st and then 65 in 2nd. My MCS can go to 45 (wayyyy toooo high is you ask me) in 1st and then nearly 70 (again wayyy tooo high) in 2nd. But the point is, if the SRT is running the same 5 speed gearbox my base model Neon does, then it'll go 65 in 2nd gear too.

dominicminicoopers Jun 27, 2003 11:20 PM

>>I sometimes accelerate onto the road in a hurry then cruise... 1, 2, 6.

Hey! You stole my shifting secret! Give it back

I alsomst did that one time in my Neon. It's a 5spd. Nearly ruined the tranny by throwing it into reverse at 55 MPH!!! That would've been a big owie!

Okay, I have to ask: Why do you own a MINI and a Neon?

dominicminicoopers Jun 27, 2003 11:37 PM

>>Okay, I have to ask: Why do you own a MINI and a Neon?

Exhaustively explained somewhere in the bowels of the 64 page long CWFFC thread

Basically it comes down to a matter of timing and resources...

katnkevin Jun 27, 2003 11:57 PM

I don't care how quick the SRT-4 is, it looks like a refrigerator with wheels!

weaverpsu Jun 27, 2003 11:58 PM

Hey Sleepless i wouldn't buy a SRT-4 in a billion years. I was just sharing some thoughts as to why exactly with even 200 hp (or 220 for that matter) the MINI still isnt all that quick.

socalclassic Jun 28, 2003 12:26 AM

How many old Omni GLHS do you see today? How many 2002's do you see today? It all about quality. The dodge will be junk in 3 years and the mini will still be around to see the next decade! And still have the same preformance.
Talk about chrysler quality have you seen a TC around?
