Going to Palmer is a bit of a hike for me for a one day event. The BMW groups do a 2 day event which makes more sense for me, plus they have good instructors. It is good that it is getting “cleaned up” bit by bit. Loosing a tire last year to an embedded sharp stone was very discouraging. If I go, I might consider spring for garage space.

It is related to a failure of the auxiliary water pump that cools the turbo. I don’t know anyway to check it other than have the dealer check it. There is a second level code that it will throw, but it takes the BMW software to find it; a ScanGage won’t see it. Also, I don’t know if the electronics associated with it which fail causing the pump not to run are part of the pump. If I remember correctly it was the electronics failure that was causing fires and forced a recall. It is probably something that is easy to replace as a DYI project and not too expensive, just make sure you get the right parts. On mine the dealer replace a bit of the wiring; not sure why.
On the N18 engine I can read oil temperature and on the track I was seeing temperatures of about 280 deg when this pump failed. These temperatures were really cooking the oil. Oil like Castral and Mobile 1 can’t handle those temps. Redline had a tough time with it. I went to 5 - 40W oil which helped. The radiator fan would run almost any time I turned the car off, even on a cold day. On a track day the fan would run for 10 or 15 min (I may be exaggerating a bit here, but it was a long time). I would let the fan run for a few minutes and then start the engine, let it run for a minute and then turn it off. That seemed to help. At that time, I didn’t know what was wrong, I was just guess at what might help. Now I know. Starting the car up probably helped save the turbo as that would have pushed fresh oil through the bearings and kept thee oil in the bearings from turning to coke, tar or whatever it does when it gets cooked.

SCDA is pushing their last 2 events. Both are a LRP and the next one is a two day event October 26-27 and then their season finale on November 10th! Don't worry, we have a weather guarantee!
Hmmmm, I wonder if "Performance Snow Tires" are really performance tires or not... With the weather we have been having one or the other of these event would be good for trying them out...
I wonder if the "weather guarantee" applies to just snow or to excessive cold? Uggggha!

How many track days did people do this past season? And did you make any changes that you either liked or didn’t like?
I had 2 really good days at LRP. I am liking the new brakes and the roll bar has stiffened the car nicely. Maybe I’ll work on the race seats for next year, but I really like the stock seat as a compromise, so I haven’t thought about it much. Not a fan of the Mobile 1 (0w40) oil in the MINI. It is about as good as the 5w30 Castrol and no where near as good a the Redline or Motul 5w40

I have thought hard about getting one of their tunes, but have held off with the the brake issues I have had where they have been getting cooked, especially at WGI. I don’t need more Hp and higher speeds when I don’t have brakes enough to handle the speeds I am going at now. I am hoping my new brakes will solve that problem for me. If they do then it will be a tune for me. I think there is a place in northern NJ that does these tunes.
I use a ScanGage to get water temperature plus 3 other parameters. Works well on the track.

Manic is the one I'm looking at. To go to a Stage 2 Manic I'd need a hi-flow downpipe that won't pass CT emissions. So if I do it I'll wait until after my next emissions test which I think is January.

I have also been reading about the “RPM” tune. The vendor MarioKart has been posting about it. People who have used it are posting that it is better than Manic. An advantage that Manic has is that within each stage there are A, B and C maps that can be used if you have done something to your car (eg: an intercooler), but it is still basically stock, and not enough of a change to go to Stage II. Manic also allows you to go back to the stock tune anytime you want.

Happy Thanksgiving, Everyone!
My S is in the garage on a battery tender. Our Cooper has exchanged it AS tires for its wonderful studless ice and snow tires. The Wrangler has new wheels (2 OEM steel ones were bent), has a new-used hard top and a new and great Rhino Rack roof rack. 8 deg outside when I got up this morning and a bit of snow on the ground but it is warm and cozy inside.
Just waiting for someone else to finish cooking the turkey.

Back at you — hope you had a good day. You don't happen to know if a Battery Tender programmed for a gel battery can be used on a standard battery, do you? I've been looking all over for an answer and can't find one. I even emailed the makers of the Battery Tender but haven't received a reply.

Thanks. It turns out that older Deltran Battery Tenders labeled "Programmed for Gel Batteries" can't be used on lead acid. The newer ones can be used on anything.

I just got the 7.5 amp version of the Genius charger and wondered how you were making out with the gel vs lead battery charging as I saw that the Genius does both.

I read back through the first few pages of this thread. There was a lot of enthusiasm and excitement back then on the part of Slinger, VV, Sdriver, RedSkunk and GKP for the SCDA schedule at that time and in particular to head out to Monticello. In particular my name pops up as one wanting to go to Monticello. This would have been my first time ever on the track. It was Slinger’s enthusiasm that got me to do the track thing and his knowledge and help gave me a good start.
