Where do you shift your R56?

What rpm do they like to be shifted at when racing?

Most shift at the top of the torque curve. The ones that don't never seem to keep up.

I don't drag race, but I am trying to go quick. It depends on the R56 and the gear. The theoretical way to do it is with a torque curve and you have to work out when the added gearing of changing up is less of a disadvantage than falling off the other end of the torque curve.

I have a spreadsheet to do that, and there's also an iPhone ap for it.

In a Cooper, its always advantagous to change up at red line.

In an 08 Cooper-S, red line from first and second, and slightly under redline for the higher gears.

In a 2012 JCW, its red line from first and slightly less with each gear, but the time you change up from 4th its 5900.

Great info!! thank you

Keep in mind if you change too early you will be out of the power band in the next gear. You have to find a compromise.

On my stock 2006 R53 I would normally shift at around 5500 RPM, this would leave me at about 4500 for the next gear.

If I shifted closer to red line then the next gear would begin around 5500, and the butt-dyno felt like there was less pull starting a gear that high.

So far my R59 feels about the same, but to be honest I haven't pushed this car as hard as the R53.

Each car is different, a little experimentation is needed to figure out what works best for your car.
