Use of clay bar pad.

I left Florida for several months on Sat. and I’m back in Ohio caring for a 02 Z3 that I keep garaged. I routinely use clay bars (play dough like product) after washing and before I do any paint correction procedure. Today I used a new clay bar pad 5”x4” and the results were outstanding. I could hear and feel the paint telling you when it was done. Lubrication, I use the Wolfgang Uber wash diluted down (1 ounce to a 32 ounce spray bottle) which I prefer over the use of plain water. Use whatever buffing compounds you prefer afterwards but I really can endorse the use of a clay bar pad over the use of the old clay bar play dough like product.

How about a link to product? Seems like lots of different kinds available. I know play dough, but not clay dough.

I clay bar a couple of times a year after a Dawn detergent wash in preperation for a fresh wax application. I use the Speed Shine with clay bar.

There's some new stuff in their catalog that I'm not familiar with. Been using the old standard for several years.
The catalog has links to videos showing how to use their products.

Minnie, I used the reference of play dough just anyone interested would know that this is the maliable bar. What I used was an actual pad or in some forms I’ve seen a small towel. The ease of use for the pad Iused was fantastic. Spray on some Uber wash and give a complete wipe down with the pad. I could hear the sediment coming out of the paint. And then it would stop. Absolutely like glass and then afterwards clean it in water and you’re ready to go for the next time. The tried and true clay bar builds up with sediment after a while. I bought mine from a detailer in California so I could test the product. For $8.00-$9.00 it was well worth the test. ez-store1 was the fellow selling these on EBay. Hope this helps.

i absolutely recommend Griot's Synthetic Clay bar. I have their flagship store locally and went down to pick up some products after my recent Mini Purchase. It made a HUGE difference, originally i was going to opt for the normal clay bar but I was speaking to one of their guys and they recommended the synth stuff as it lasts longer, works with their Car Wash (not just the Speed Shine product) and you dont have to toss it if you drop it.

Brilliant Finish Clay Bar

Never being one to follow advice, I went ahead an ordered Mothers 17240 Speed Clay 2.0

I went for this one because the shape looks easier to hold onto then the round puck of Griots.

I'd put Mother's products right up there with the best. I'm a Griot's guy 'cause that's the catalog a guy gave me right off the bat. Anyway. I did get to visit their HQ in Tacoma once. The had a Lambo parked in the garage and those dummies wouldn't let this self proclaimed expert take it for a test drive to make sure it wasn't a knock off.

They should start a sister company and call it "Mothers & Apple Pies"

Me Too!

This is the first clay bar that I bought, so I don't have a comparison regarding end results; however, the synthetic clay seemed to be more for a person like me who isn't detailing too often, and is looking for a product that I can use over a period of time without babying it.

Regardless of what brand you use, Griot's website has videos showing how to use the products. Select 'Polish & Wax' then 'Surface Prep'. Select a product with Quick View then 'More Details' and you'll see the little arrow to play the video.
