EZ pass question?

Will the EZ pass work in the area (Dulles toll road) by holding it up when you go through the lane or does it need to be 'mounted' someway?

Thanks!

They can work by just being on the dash of your car. My cousin puts it in his vest pocket when he goes through tolls on his motorcycle.

I keep mine in the glovebox and just hold it in my hand as I pass thru the toll booth.

Never had a problem in MD ...now I don't know about VA .. but I don't do VA

I mounted mine with the included Velcro on the rear panorama window.

I positioned it as far forward as possible in the center of the glass. i forget it is there. As soon as you close the shade, it is out of mind...

I travel out to Dulles every day and have never had a problem getting the sensor to deduct the fare.

... of course, if you don't have a sunroof, this isn't much of a solution.

It works. It works great. I use it everytime I go up/down the toll road and when I drive up to Boston. I have mine mounted on the windscreen, but we use it in Michael's car sometimes by just holding it up. The "stealth" mount along the sunroof also works. Paul! has his mounted that way.

Thanks for all the super quick responses! Since it is free and money does not expire I figure what the hell... I forgot about the sunroof mount, out of sight-out of mind.

Mine is mounted with Velcro to front windshield, hidden by rear view mirror. I put a "At the Gap there be Dragons" sticker on it so it didn't look like such a white blob.

It'll work if you hold it up. To make sure, I have the habit of rolling back the sun screen. I had an external one (long story) but now just use the regular one. When I have the sunroof open, I just stick my hand out the sunroof with the EZ Pass and it works... never failed on me yet in a year!

Those things can be read from almost anywhere.

Mine was low on $$, so I figured I would put it in the pocket behind the seat and take a ticket...well you got it...it still read it from the pocket behind the seat!

If you have your sunroof tinted, the stealth mount in the rear sunroof doesnt work.

I like the rear sunroof mounting idea. I usually just set mine on the dashboard but if I forget to remove it there is a lovely sound that follows after I take a sharp turn and it goes flying into the door.

Aren't all sunroofs tinted?

Yes, they are tinted a bit...I had mine tinted with an extra 20% which seemed to make the ezpass not function properly in the stealth mount.

The reason after market tint does not allow EZ pass to work is the metallic content of most after market tints.

MINI windows are almost totally clear when stock.

I just got a new EZ Pass and it came in a electrostatic bag and the bag says, "If you don't want your EZ Pass to be used keep it inside this bag"

Maybe it depends on the type of tint. But we have it mounted there and it still works even with a Union Jack sunroof flag.

That bag is also a faraday cage, that's why. You know, just like the car in general.

You can always test it out on the Dulles Toll Road (but not the Dulles Greenway). Thanks to that Washington Post article, everyone knows that the cameras don't work on the toll road, so no tickets ever get sent out to violators unless you are in an actual lane and the toll attendant writes up your license plate number...

I have two employees that have never paid a toll in over two years - they go through the high speed lanes on 267, and only use the exit lanes in rush hour when the lane bars are up to facilitate traffic.

Basically, my point was that way if it doesn't work wherever you choose to mount it, it won't matter 'cause you won't get a ticket!

in most states, you can alternatively request a thin black unit that fits on the front license plate mount rather than the standard white interior unit. in NYC area, they often issue these for european cars with heavy OEM window tinting. or did anyway. I had one on the volvo until it got smushed (don't ask - I don't tell stories about my lovely wife). call the easy-pass folks if you think you might want one of those instead. it's a little more stealthy, but some urban areas report theft issues.

Yep - I had one of these until the car wash people stole it. *sigh*. Guess that was my just desserts for not washing my MINI myself!

When you all registered for a EZ Pass what make of car did you put? They don't have MINI on the Maryland site so they told me to put in Unknown. haha
