Hey Red Five!

Or is it Red Four?

I don't know, but you've got the best MINI roof in town. I saw you at the Rte. 40/St. Johns Lane Intersection a couple of weeks ago, and I thought, "where'd he get all those stickers?"

BTW--my kids and I are really into ST TOS but we were blown away by the recent re-release of Galactica (hey, we've been overseas for 10 years).

Needless to say, I was wallowing in my Ford Explorer. My MCS MC40 was safely tucked away from the commute.

At any rate, I think we need to get Ellicott City MINIs together and go for a run. Are you up for designing a Time/Speed/Distance Rally? I've some experience at this. Let me know. There are too many MINIs in EC to let this go any longer.

Thanks!

Why limit it to just Ellicott City MINIs? Design an event open for all DCMM members!

I agree! There are a lot of DCMM members on this side of town and beyond, that would love to go on a new run. I myself live minutes away in Columbia.

Red 5 on Endor. Let's run down some Ewoks!

Red 5 wouldn't be complete with plates and an astromech droid.

Logo of the Rebel Alliance. A toy Tie Fighter and X-Wing hang in the windshield.

The Incom logo and a chrome XW on the boot. Now there's a COOPER XW on the road!

Five Imperial cogs mark my kills!

A painting by Ralph McQuarrie adorns the roof. It's the Death Star trench battle from Star Wars, A New Hope. The Rebel Alliance logo can also be seen on the gas cap cover (there's on on the opposite side too)

If you look real close between the seats, you can see the blue and white of R2D2. He's in the cup holder (AKA the Droid socket). And yes, I do keep a lightsaber in the glove box.

Close up of the roof painting.

May the Force be with you.

Yep, and now you can see why I had such a great view from my tippy Ford Exploder--what a roof!. My MCS MC40 is a Plain Jane in comparison to Red 5--my car is just Chili Red and White--one sticker that says "Monte Carlo, 1964."

BTW, the speed channel is Mini rich every morning at 0700 with "Classics of Motor Sport," which I think is a British production. Watch Paddy Hopkirk pass Fords, Lancias, Porsches, et al, in Europe, Austalia, just about everywhere but the USA (V-8 Centric?).

So, onto the Time/Speed/Distance (TSD) rally. I'd be more than happy to organize one, they're a hoot, but being the organizer is a lot like being the host at a wine tasting: you have to keep it together while everyone else just goes ballistic! So, if we could set up a series with some volunteers who would do one every quarter (every three months), I'd be glad to do the first and help out on the others, but I'd like to MAKE THE RUN sometime!

I've designed and run several TSD rallies in the UK and Austalia, but I've never done one in the USA (despite growing up in NJ!). Are there any laws, regulations, insurance considerations I need to know about? Does DC/MM have any guidelines or a manual on this? (If not, I can make one up....) Do drivers need to sign waivers?

I'd love to do this, aiming for the April/May timeframe (I actually have a job, am working on a Phd, and have four kids. Oh, did I mention my wife is in Baghdad?), but I'll need a Co-Rally-Director to help (you can do this alone, but it's a lot of work). All we need is good maps, a stopwatch or three, and a good sense of humor.

I have in mind a treasure hunt motif TSD rally, that would have some fun adventures and end at a nice restaurant for dinner.

So, volunteers in the EC area?

Hi there Justbob!
Thanks for the nice compliments on Red 5's deco!

Sorry it took me so long to reply. I have been super crazy busy and not on the forums much lately. Yes, we do need to get not only the local MINIs together, but all the DCMM MINIs together! I love seeing lots of MINIs together. So much so that when I see another MINI going the same way I am, I catch up and pull into formation with them! I would love to have a MINI project to work on. I am around this weekend if you would like to try and meet for lunch or coffee and chat.

MTFBWY,

Red 5, good to hear from you. This weekend is turning out a bit hectic for me, but how about some time this week?Tues-Thurs. is good for me, anytime after 6p.m. or so. Give me a call: 443-690-0633. I 'm a single parent for the next two weeks, as my wife is away, but we can fit this in. I live in Turf Valley.

For the rest of you DCMM members (in prep for the road rally), how far are you willing to drive in one afternoon? I'm just trying to to get a feel for how many miles you'd like to put on your cars.

Bob,

I think you'd be surprised how far some of us are willing to drive for a good driving event... but if you really want some specific numbers, how's this:

The Backroads & Battlefields III run last year started in Frederick, MD, and ended well west of Frederick. The run itself was for about 100 miles, divided of course into shorter legs, including a meal stop. If you couple the 100 miles of the run with the "getting to Frederick" and "getting home afterwards" miles, you can see how far some people were willing to go.

So I would "suggest" a distance limit of 100 miles for the event itself. Of course, that's probably the longest event, so having it shorter is fine too! Just as long as the event is kept interesting, I don't think distance is a problem.

What do others think?

You do realize he's talking TSD here and not scavanger hunt or gimmick? I thought DCMM has never done a TSD before?
100 miles might be mighty tedious doing those calculations TSD is not a fun run, per se.

Yes, I do realize that. I was simply trying to give him a maximum boundary. Clearly, if 100 miles does not fit the event, then he won't make it that big. But he also won't have to be concerned about making it 30 miles, 50 miles, or 75 miles, whatever fits. The whole point was to rest his fears about people not wanting to drive certain distances.

Ahh, sounds good! I would just think that 100 miles in a fun run, is well .... fun. 100 miles in a TSD would be ... very tiring cause you actually got to "think" . Of course, everyone could buy one of those fancy TSD computers and let the computers do the work!!!
