Chrisfb1's radar question
New kid on the block chapter 2:
Radar solution. i have passport Radar detector and ZR3 laser shifter on my MINI. I will be living in Rockville MD (80% chance) I work on 16nw in DC. love to travel to Virginia somewhere close to the area. what should i do with my radar blings? keep it and get tickets? (90% not wanted) Hide it?(100% would love to) other solutions? (playing silly with ym GA plates and license! or pretending i only speak chinese! ) anyone have any idea on this? driving at speed limit is very hard for me:grin: lived in Europe too long! driving at speed limit on I95 also scared me when all the MD driver passing me at high speed. driving without RD is like a driving blinded on highway. what should i do? |

what should i do with my radar blings? ... what should i do? As to VA, I wouldnt get rid of the passport, just take it down when in VA. Do NOT get caught speeding in VA. See https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...3&page=1&pp=25 You WILL regret it. |
 i know about VA, that was the worst part of the drive when i went up last time.
i guess i got to take it off. what about in DC? it is the same thing right? |
Radar detectors are illegal in DC as well. It's posted at every street that enters the district so probably pleading ignorance won't work.
I wouldn't get rid of them, just keep them off and hidden when driving in VA and DC. BTW DC also uses red light cameras AND photo radar, both fixed as well as in cars parked on the side of the road. Red light cameras are installed at many intersections in VA, however they are all turned off statewide as the legislation that authorized them expired and wasn't renewed... |
[QUOTE=chows4us]ROFL, well if that is your car in the center of your sig, I'd pretty much bet those round neons or whatever they are are ILLEGAL in MD to begin with.
QUOTE] chows4us, is the Dragonslayer decal legal over there? https://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1...rpDSC00161.jpg About hiding the radar in VA. are there RDD in the police cars? if there are, i am gonna need a switch for the detector, otherwise i will still be in trouble, even they can really prove it, but at least they have a reading on it, if they have reading, i dont think it will be so hard for them to figure out a excuse to give me a ticket for something. |

Very nice decal!. As to whether its legal or not. I can't say. However, read here: http://www.tintdude.com/laws.html I've read several places that the tinting law is 5". If the decal is wider than 5", I'm sure they can think of reason for stopping you (like obstruction). As to the Radar Detector, if your hardwired, hmm dont know. I also don't know if VA uses RDDs. I would assume so since VA can be nasty. As to the blue round lights ... see http://www.berwynheightspd.com/tinted%20windows.htm "22-227(b) RED OR BLUE LIGHT VISIBLE FROM THE FRONT - Except as required or permitted in 22-218 of this subtitle, (regarding the operation of Emergency or School Vehicles) a person may not drive or move any vehicle or equipment on any highway with any lamp or device on it that displays a Red or Blue Light visible directly from the front of it’s center." What that says for your headlight covers, dunno. Welcome to Maryland! |
I've been using a detector in MD/DC/VA for a long time. I live in Bowie MD, and leave it up if I'm just going to work in the district. I have underground parking, so it's unlikely for a cop to pull me over for the detector alone, and if being pulled over, it's very simple to reach up and place it on the floor. If you park on the street though, I wouldn't be surprised if you got towed for it knowing DC cops.
Virginia is a lot more anal, and I always take it down when crossing the VA border, which is rarely. |
I live in Olney, MD and travel to VA daily for work. I would say, that I keep my RD, a V1, on all the time. I have mine hardwired and mounted right next to the read view mirror. The small black band around the windshield hides it fairly well.
If you are going to be living in Montgomery County, be advised that most of the speed traps in that county are now set up with lasers, in an instant on mode. By the time your detector goes off and you react, they have you. When travelling in DC, not very often, I will turn the RD off, sometimes take it down, depending on where I'm parking. As for the use of RDD's in VA, I have heard that are used, but personally don't know of any one who has been nabbed. What you will run into on the beltway here is an individual with a 'cheapo' RD that is radiating just a little too much. I pick these up all the time, mostly from behind me. Just slow down and let them pass, and the display goes from rear signal, to side signal, to no signal. I have noticed that when I'm behind certain year and model of GM SUV's that the LD picks up their instrument cluster lighting. Must be the same wave length that the LD is looking for. Also, the same thing happens when I'm in front of Infinity FX's crossover car/suv. Here is something to think about. Within the next couple of years, cars will be equipped with either radar or laser systems that will be tied into the cruise control function. So that you can drive along and always maintain the same distance between you and the car infront of you. No more brake tapping or disengaging the cruise control. Hopefully the automobile manufactures will select a radar/laser band/wavelength that are not used by the law enforcement community. Otherwise . . . . . |
thanks for the info. that was a lot of details.
i have the ZR3 laser shifter, it shift the laser beam to different direction to make it have false reading or no reading. it is totally legal since it does not jam the beam. i have run into so many times when i see that evil laser gun cop try to hunt me down. ZR3 has saved me since i had it. about the detector, i guess i just take it down on and off then, until i install a stealth system. when V1 pick up the car behind you, is because their laser cruise control system. i used to have V1 but switch to Passport due to couple of times friends MINI with passport pick up the warning early than me. can't take the chances. |

I have seen stories in the Wash Post, where the local police take a very aggressive stand against the lights. That is all I can say. Look forward to meeting up when you finally get up in the area. |
