Any GTG's planned in VA?
see? I said 'skyline sucks, but the rest is golden'. feel better now?
Some BB's have "ignore" buttons... I'm beginning to understand why. I see NAM's works beautifully. Blessed relief.
But, I digress. It looks like Edge is trying to get the Spring Fling going. Maybe the original route can be modified a tad to encompass more of the 211 roads?

I'm sorry your reading comprehension needs work. Feel free to use the ignore function - here, I'll help - click

Help wanted planning a route to VIR
Hi folks-
I'm trying to plan a two day drive from the Annapolis area to Danville, VA for the Phil Wicks school in July. What I'm thinking about is taking route 50 west from Winchester, south on 42 at Mt. Storm, SW on 28 through Seneca Rocks, and south on 250 to Monterey, where I'd like to spend the night (great B&B). And, of course, from there on to Danville the next day.
A bit of Skyline Drive would be okay, but I've driven it end to end enough times to want to see something different this time.
After reading your posts, I just KNOW you've got a better way to get there than that, so I'm asking for your suggestions. Thanks in advance for your help

42S is one of 'America's Top Ten Roads' according to one of the car rags. there are a few legs I'd do differently to get out there (through Fort Valley and across Edinburg Gap), but you want to hit Seneca, so 50 is good.
im not trying to shoot anybody down or anything, im just curious about something. its only 5 hours from annapolis to vir, what would we do with the rest of that time? even if we took all back roads, i cant imagine it taking that long. even if we doubled that driving time to 10 hours, it still wouldnt make sense to stay in a hotel, unless you planned to stay close to VIR, or to start late the day before the event. theres no way you can turn 5 hours into 48...is there? so whats planned to fill all that time?

Good observation D-Unit, but I'm using this as an excuse to see roads and places I don't normally get to see. Sure, I could drive straight through in 5 or 6 hours (and that's for sure how I'll get home on Tuesday after the event), but instead, I want to take the opportunity to enjoy time away from home on some interesting, possibly technical roads, take some scenic pictures, eat different foods, and generally enjoy being on the road in my MINI and away from the congestion and stress of the metro area.
It isn't my intention to make this a big club run (although I'd enjoy some company and everybody's more than welcome). I'm just looking forward to spending some quality time in a different place. And I figured that some of our Virginia members might have some great suggestions on roads to include.
Thanks PGT for the input, too! I grew up in the area, and spent way too much time in the Shenandoah Valley (spent my summers and darn near every weekend on my parents' farm in Woodstock, VA). I LOVE Edinburg Gap and the Fort Valley, and especially driving up the mountain with the creek beside the road
Just looking for something different this time
Keep the ideas coming, guys

Hypno - sounds like a good route you have planned. I live 40 miles south of Monterey in Hot Springs. We're on route 220, which will take you most of the way to Danville. It's a decent driving road and there are some good detours off it. Like taking route 606 over the mountain and into Clifton Forge.
There are some great sites around here and I can suggest other detours if you want to poke around Bath and Highland Counties before driving on the see Phil Wicks.

Thanks, J, that would be terrific! It looks like a pretty short drive from Monterey to Danville, and some nice roads would be a great way to use up the day. Are you going to be joining us at VIR for the HPDE? Maybe we could meet up somewhere near you, and you could lead a run

If you are by chance a classical music fan, I will give you tickets to a great concert that Sunday afternoon at Garth Newel Music Center. It's an old farm on the side of a mountain that now presents excellent concerts. That's where I'll be working - I'm the director. I know that MINIs and classical music might not be the most obvious fit, but it's great fun.
I think it's about 4 hours to Danville and I'm not lucky enough to be going to VIR. I have to work on Sunday afternoon, but I might be up for making part of the drive and then turning back.

BTW, I've heard great things about the center, but never had the chance to visit. Do you happen to know who is performing on the 20th?
That is a great fit!
I'm happy to provide complimentary tickets to as many DCMMers as you can round up. We hold our concerts in an old horse ring with great acoustics and great views through the windows. The whole vibe is informal and the playing is excellent so we lose the bad stuff that can tarnish classical music while keeping the good parts.
Looks like we have the makings of a GTG in VA.
