Motorsports Events: Track days, Driving Schools, Auto-X - Weigh In!

Check around, a lot of local clubs host track events. Most allow other makes to run with them ensuring a good turn out. Mazda Sports Car Club of Washington just did an event in October at Summit Point's Shenandoah track that was filmed by Motorweek. Mike Arata put one together last year on Summit's Jefferson circuit.

Come on speed freaks, if you really wanna have a good fast run, let's do it on a track!

Oh, they also have plenty of bathrooms.

its really a great idea- you get to do some spirited driving at your level, and you learn tons of stuff that can be translated to the highway- skill and safety wise...
did i mention its just a great feeling when you (in a cooper) pass an S or even more powerful cars like M3s, Porsches, and vipers (not that they are really good cars to begin with)
oh yes- the track is a wonderful place!
I really like the above comments.
We have been talking, chatting, discussing, mentioning, about the possibility of making our track day event or autox event possible. We've also thought about joining the event with other clubs like BMWCCA, etc, if possible.

Now since we're starting to have more and more members that are interested. We need to get together and make this become reality.

We need input, also action and lots of contribution to make this happen. Lets the brainstorm begin.

This thread is specifically for all kind of motorsports related events: track day, driving school, autox or 1/4 mile.

Members and friends, please post your interested event(s) into the poll above.
(Note: the poll is for evaluation purpose, which will be use to determine the future events)

Thanks to all in advance.

+1 on the track days

It's the most fun you can have with your driving shoes on

As a start, maybe we can agree on a Friday at the Track at Summit Point.

"Autocross is an inexpensive, safe way to experience racing. It helps you discover your car's capabilities and limitations, making you a better, safer driver on the road. And it develops your own driving ability. Many would-be race drivers use it as a jump point into the sport of road racing. But probably the greatest thrill of autocross is the challenge of beating your own time. It's fun!"

Season is pretty much over for '07.
Actually, this might be a good time to be ready for the next season.
Who wanna join DCMM autox craze.

"Friday at the track" @ Summit Point

FATT is intended to provide a safe environment in which to experience the thrill of high-speed driving. Students will receive both classroom and in-car instruction (in your street car) on ocular driving, skid control, and cornering techniques. Learn to perfect your skid control in our school cars on our 300' diameter skid pad.

How about DCMM racing group.

If you want to do some run, it's easy, the fee is $20 (unlimited runs). Check in & line up for car inspection, get number, and get in line for the runs. You can make as many run as you would like to. And you can always take a break anytime you want and join the watch group.

You can drive fast, very safe and the most importance is it's legal.

There will be all kind of cars on the day, from full race hot rod to stock Hyundai.
You might have a chance to beat any of your street rival. (or get spank )

The fun part is that, it is not a race. You can drive it easy or as aggressive as you want. Drive at your own pace. Remember, this is a fun day, not a race. You don't have to push it hard, if you don't want to.

Its also a good chance to test your car for the rwhp (real world horse power ) by calculate from the speed at the trap (finish line) and the total weight of your car. The result will be whp number (horse power @ the wheel) that will be pretty close to dyno number.

And if you decide to watch, you don't need to check in or anything, just pay entrance fee for $10. There are place for you to sit (stadium like) and watch. There is a snack bar, sandwiches, hotdogs, bugers, soda, etc.

You can also bring your girlfriend, kids, wife, husband with you. They can sit with you when you do the run as well.
Friday evening test n tune. the cheapest way to have fun.

Come join the DCMM 1320' Maniac.

Guys I would love to help out with track events. I am a regular instructor for BSR's FATT program as well as Mazdadrivers. I have also instructed with a few other clubs and/or groups. I know of at least one other FATT instructor with a MINI and he is also a member of DCMM. When I see him in a few weeks I will ask him if he is interested in helping out as well.

I have no experience in organizing an event, but have some ideas for what should be involved to run a good and productive "track day" event. Some of BSR's ideas are great, and Mazdadrivers does a wonderful job as well. Mazda I think runs thier groups better and allow for more track time for the students and instructors.

I highly encourage anyone attending an event, BSR or someone else's, to ride with your instructor during the instructor session. We love to show off, and sometimes it just becomes clear to the student what the teacher was trying to say when you see it practiced.

I look forward to seeing all of you, on the track or on the road, soon!

Chris

There are some of us who have mention and interest in helping to organize the kind of event. This is great indeed since the track day will definitely need more than one person to help organize, the more hands the merrier.

Any driving school track or driving club would be fine: the cost, the date and distance to the track will also dictate the amount of participants.
Count me in, btw.

I'm sure everyone are looking forward to see this to happen.
Thank you so much.

The last MINI day at Summit Pointe that I remember was sponsored or subsidized by MINI of Sterling. It was an awesome day, made affordable & accessible to everyone by MoS' generosity.

I wonder if they'd be open to participating again? It'd be a great way to kick off Spring!

I have heard quite a few rumors about this year MoS driving event. Couple of months ago I heard they might have one or two driving events next years. But later on, I heard that the plug was pulled off so there won't be any driving event from MoS next year. Both news are not confirmed. We will see what will happen.

If we have enough people involved and with the help from everyone who's interested , we should be able to arrange one.

I voted for all but the 1/4 mile.

These were more of the types of things I was hoping DCMM would put together when I joined.

Mike Arata was trying to organize the track days before he left MOS. We should find out about it. I will be joining the Auto X school next season, Capital Driving Club, which is inexpensive and looks very fun. What ever you pick count me in

I heard that MoS might not doing track day anymore in '08.

On the other hand, autox is not as difficult, since there are CDC, SCCA, BMWCCA and other clubs that we'll be able to join. Especailly, CDC (Capital Driving Club), they are easy to join and they are fun.

NASA's HDPE

NASA (National Auto Sport Assoc.) has announced their '08 schedule. Their first High Performance Driving Events (HDPE) school will be held on Feb 22, 23 and 24. Here is their information.
I haven't got any info on the exact schedule, the cost and etc.

Note: no 2008 schedule from CDC, SCCA and other clubs been announced yet. 11/23/07

CDC has been asked to develop a clinic for new TurboXs/AndrewTech customers at at TurboXS/AndrewTech sponsored event (similar to the last Test and Tune shootout, which only cost $15 with their sponsorship).

One of the possiblities we are considering is to use the lower lot (not used by CDC courses due to inadequate distances between the island) for the clinic, while at the same time, the normal autox is progressing. The clinic would focus on the basics maneuvers (braking, skid pad, slalom, off-set gates) with an instructor then progressing to tie them all together. Then concluding with running in a 5th afternoon heat on the regular course.

Nothing is set in stone (including cost and how many slots the clinc would have), but if we end up with this clinic, I don't see why we can't repeat the process with other participants that want the clinic.

Like Lastrega stated the Guys up at CDC are a great bunch to run with. They have a slightly different Program on how heats are done than down here in Richmond. Which i like there way a little better. Also i have a tendency to play a bit more on my runs as shown below.

Hey Mugami ,

keep me ( and the rest interested ) informed on events in Richmond. Next year my training wheels are coming off !!! and would like to see some of your "creative driving " and get some more tips.

Maybe DCMM can come down as a group and make an event out of it.

By "creative driving" do you mean that "nitrous oxide" boost in his trunk?
